California, New York, Minnesota, and several other states have laws on the books. Even where it’s not strictly illegal, it’s a bad idea. The batteries inside solar lights can leak heavy metals into groundwater, and lithium-ion batteries can literally catch fire when they get crushed in garbage trucks. That’s not a hypothetical — waste management companies deal with battery fires regularly.
So if you’ve got old solar lights piling up and you’re trying to figure out how to dispose of solar lights properly, the responsible move is to break them down and handle each part the right way. Let me walk through what’s actually inside one of these things, because once you understand the components, the disposal starts making sense.
What’s Actually Inside a Solar Light

The housing. This is the plastic or metal shell. If you separate it from everything else, the plastic part can usually go in your regular recycling bin — though check your local rules, because not all municipalities take every plastic type. Metal housings can go to a scrap metal recycler.
The solar panel. That little dark rectangle on top is a small photovoltaic cell. It contains silicon and sometimes trace amounts of other metals. This is e-waste. It doesn’t go in your recycling bin, and it definitely doesn’t go in the trash. It needs to go to an electronics recycling drop-off.
The battery. This is the critical one, and I’m going to spend a minute on it because it’s where most people mess up. Solar lights use one of three battery types: NiMH (nickel-metal hydride), NiCd (nickel-cadmium), or lithium-ion. Each has different disposal rules, and getting it wrong has real consequences.
The LED. The little light bulb itself. It’s a tiny amount of semiconductor material. Treat it as e-waste along with the panel and circuit board.
The circuit board. This is the small green board that controls when the light turns on and off. It’s got lead solder on it, which means it needs proper e-waste recycling — not the trash, not regular recycling.
The wiring. Usually copper. If you’re the type who saves scrap metal, this is the good stuff. Otherwise, bundle it with the e-waste.
So when you’re looking at solar light parts, you’ve basically got: regular recyclables (housing), scrap metal (wiring), and e-waste (panel, LED, circuit board, battery). The battery is the one that needs the most care, so let’s dig into that.
The Battery Disposal Rules (Read This Part)
I’m going to be direct here because this matters. Never throw rechargeable batteries in the regular trash. Not the ones from your solar lights, not the ones from your old phone, not any of them. NiMH batteries are the most common in newer solar lights. They’re relatively safe — no highly toxic metals — but they still contain nickel, which you don’t want leaching into soil. NiCd batteries are the ones to really watch for. They contain cadmium, which is toxic and can leach into groundwater. If you’ve got an older light or a very inexpensive one, assume the battery might be NiCd and treat it accordingly. Must be recycled. No exceptions.
Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly common in solar lights, especially the brighter ones and the ones that claim to run all night. These are the batteries that can catch fire if they get punctured or crushed — and garbage trucks do a lot of crushing. If you’re recycling a lithium-ion battery, tape the terminals with electrical tape or packing tape before you drop it off. Some recycling centers also want them in separate plastic bags. This isn’t being extra cautious; it’s standard safety protocol that prevents fires at recycling facilities.
For finding where to take them, search “battery recycling near me.” There’s a program called Call2Recycle that has a locator on their website, and most of the big hardware and electronics chains have bins you can walk in and use. Solar light battery recycling is genuinely easy once you know where to look. The hard part is just remembering to do it instead of tossing the whole light in the trash because it’s easier.
Before You Recycle: Can It Be Saved?
Here’s the part that surprised me. Before you break down a dead solar light for recycling, it’s worth checking whether it’s actually dead. I went through my box of eleven lights and discovered that a bunch of them weren’t broken at all — they just had dead batteries.
Dead battery. This is the most common failure mode, and it’s the cheapest fix. A replacement NiMH AA battery costs maybe two or three dollars. Sometimes this is just dirt or haze that you can clean off with a soft cloth and some soapy water. If it’s actual UV damage to the plastic covering the panel, the light is probably finished. Worth trying to clean first though, because a dirty panel is a common and fixable problem.
So out of my eleven dead lights: three came back with new batteries, one came back with cleaned contacts, two had cracked housings but working internals that I set aside for repurposing, and five were genuinely done and went to recycling. The solar panel means they recharge themselves during the day if you set them in a window. Simple, but it works. I’ve got two in my kitchen drawer now and I’ve used them twice during outages.
Give them to kids. Solar lights are catnip for kids who like building forts, and the internals are genuinely interesting for science projects. The solar panel, battery, and LED form a complete mini electrical circuit that a kid can actually understand and mess with. Just take the battery out first if it’s a younger kid, and supervise. My neighbor’s twelve-year-old spent a whole afternoon wiring LEDs together from three old lights I gave him.

Check if replacement batteries are available. Some manufacturers sell replacement battery packs for their lights. That’s a strong signal they expect the light to outlast the original battery. If you can’t find replacements from the maker, at least make sure the light uses a standard battery size (AA or AAA NiMH is common) that you can buy anywhere online or at a local store.
Buy fewer, better lights. This is the advice nobody wants to hear, including me. It’s tempting to buy a twenty-pack of cheap solar lights online for the price of three good ones. But twenty cheap lights become twenty pieces of e-waste in two years. Three good lights with replaceable batteries might still be working in five years. Less money over time, less waste, less stuff in your garage box.
