Understanding Your Soil Type
There are three main soil types, and most yards have some combination of them.
Clay soil is heavy, sticky when wet, and hard when dry. It holds nutrients well but drains poorly and is difficult for roots to penetrate. Clay soil can be excellent for vegetables if amended with organic matter, but unamended clay is a poor growing medium.

Loam soil is the ideal: a balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay. It drains well, holds nutrients, and is easy to work. Loam is what you are trying to create through amendment, even if your native soil is clay or sand.
The jar test tells you your soil composition. Fill a straight sided jar one third full with soil from your garden spot. Add water to nearly full, add a drop of dish soap, shake vigorously, and let it settle for 24 hours. The sand settles first (bottom layer), then silt (middle), then clay (top). The relative thickness of each layer tells you your soil composition.
Soil pH

Less bending. A 12 to 18 inch tall raised bed is much easier on your back than ground level gardening.
Defined space. A raised bed has clear boundaries that keep you from expanding the garden haphazardly and help with planning.
Better pest control. Raised beds are easier to cover with netting or row cover to protect from birds, rabbits, and insects.
Building a Raised Bed
A simple raised bed is a rectangular frame made from untreated wood, filled with soil. The standard beginner size is 4×8 feet, 12 inches tall.

Cedar and redwood are naturally rot resistant and last 7 to 10 years. They cost 40 to 80 dollars for a bed. You do not need a tiller for a raised bed garden. Tillers are for large in ground gardens and can actually damage soil structure by over tilling.
What to Plant Your First Year
Choose crops that are easy to grow, productive, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. Avoid crops that are fussy, slow, or pest prone.
The Beginner Friendly Crops
Radishes. The easiest vegetable to grow. Plant seeds directly in the soil, and they are ready to harvest in 25 to 35 days. They practically cannot fail. Plant a few every two weeks for a continuous harvest.

Bush beans. Plant seeds directly in the soil after the last frost. They produce in 50 to 60 days and do not require staking (unlike pole beans). A 4 foot row produces several pounds of beans.
Zucchini. famously prolific. One or two plants will feed a family. Plant seeds directly in the soil after the last frost. Harvest when the squash is 6 to 8 inches long for the best flavor and continued production.
Tomatoes (cherry type). Cherry tomatoes are easier than large slicing tomatoes. They ripen faster, are less prone to cracking and blossom end rot, and produce continuously. Plant one or two seedlings (not seeds) after the last frost. Indeterminate varieties (which keep growing and producing) need a tall cage or stake.
Swiss chard. Almost indestructible. Plant from seed in spring, harvest outer leaves as needed, and the plant keeps producing all season. It tolerates heat better than lettuce and is rarely bothered by pests.
Herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley). Easy to grow, expensive to buy, and they make everything taste better. Basil pairs with tomatoes (plant them together). Cilantro and parsley grow well from seed.
Crops to Avoid Your First Year
Celery. Requires consistent moisture, long growing season, and is difficult to grow well.
Cauliflower. Needs consistent temperatures, is prone to pest problems, and easily fails to form a head.
Sweet corn. Needs a large block (at least 4 rows) for proper pollination and takes up a lot of space for the yield.
Onions from seed. Onions are better grown from sets (small bulbs) for beginners. Growing from seed requires starting indoors 10 to 12 weeks before planting.
Watermelon and pumpkins. Take a long season, need lots of space, and are prone to pest problems.
How Much to Plant
A common mistake is planting too much of one crop. Six zucchini plants will produce more zucchini than any family can eat. Two tomato plants will keep you in tomatoes all summer.

Common Pests and Solutions

Cabbage worms (green caterpillars on cabbage, broccoli, kale) eat holes in leaves. If caterpillars are already present, pick them off by hand or spray with BTK (a biological control that kills caterpillars but is harmless to other organisms).
Squash bugs attack squash and pumpkins. They are difficult to control once established. The best defense is row cover until the plants begin to flower (then remove it for pollination). Hand pick adults and crush egg clusters on the leaf undersides.
Tomato hornworms are large green caterpillars that defoliate tomato plants. They are hard to spot because they blend in with the foliage. Look for their dark droppings on the leaves below where they are feeding. Pick them off by hand and drop them in soapy water.
