The narrow urban backyard is a specific beast. I am talking about the 20-foot-wide, 40-foot-deep rectangle flanked by a six-foot privacy fence on both sides, with a neighbor’s bedroom window staring down at you from two stories up. These yards are common in older neighborhoods, row-house districts, and inner suburbs, and they are a lighting challenge that most guides ignore entirely.
The problem is not light. The problem is where the light goes. In a narrow yard, every fixture you mount on a fence or a wall throws light sideways into the neighbor’s window. Every upward-facing light bounces off the fence and creates a glow that the people on the other side have to live with. Get this wrong and you will have a conversation with your neighbor that neither of you wants to have.
I have lit dozens of these yards, and the approach is different from a wide suburban lot. Everything is lower, tighter, and more directional. Here is what works.
The Geometry of a Narrow Yard
Before you buy a single fixture, stand in your yard at dusk and look around. Notice where the light would go if you mounted a fixture on each fence, on the house wall, and on the garage. Notice the windows.
In a 20-foot-wide yard, a fixture mounted at eye level on one fence will throw light across the entire yard and directly onto the opposite fence, which is 20 feet away. If that fence has gaps, the light goes through. If the fence is solid, the light bounces back, creating a double glow that fills the yard with ambient scatter.
The neighbor’s windows are the real constraint. A two-story house next door has bedroom windows looking down into your yard at an angle. Any upward light, any light on top of a fence, any light on a tall post, will be visible from those windows. You need to keep your light below the fence line, or aimed so sharply downward that it never reaches the top of the fence.
The Fence Line Rule
Here is the rule I work by. No light source should be visible from above the fence line. This means no fixtures on top of the fence, no tall post lights, no string lights strung fence-to-fence at the top. Everything stays below six feet, and ideally below four.
This sounds restrictive, and it is. But the constraint forces a lighting style that is actually better for narrow yards anyway. Low, layered, directional light is more intimate and more usable than tall, bright, omnidirectional light. The constraint improves the design.
Fixture Types for Narrow Yards
Low Path Lights
The workhorse of the narrow yard is the low path light, 12 to 18 inches tall, with a fully shielded head that directs all light downward. These mark the walking path, define the edges, and do not throw light past about 3 feet horizontally.
The key is the shielding. A path light with an open top or a transparent lens throws light in all directions. A path light with a solid metal cap and a side lens, or no lens at all, throws light only down. Look for fixtures described as “fully shielded” or “dark sky compliant.” These are designed to emit no light above horizontal.
In a 40-foot-long yard, I would place four to six of these along the path, staggered side to side. The pools of light mark the route without lighting the fences.
Step Lights and Recessed Wall Lights
If your yard has steps, a deck, or a low retaining wall, recessed step lights are ideal. These mount flush with the surface and project light only outward and down. They are invisible during the day and unobtrusive at night.
The solar versions have a small panel on the face, which needs to face the sun. On a north-facing wall, this will not work. On a south or west-facing wall, it will. Check your orientation before buying.
For existing walls without a recess, surface-mount step lights work. These are low-profile boxes, 2 to 3 inches deep, that mount to the wall surface. They still direct light down and out. The profile is visible during the day but unobtrusive if the finish matches the wall.
Under-Rail Deck Lights
If your narrow yard has a deck, the under-rail light is your friend. These are small fixtures that mount under the top rail of the deck railing, pointing down onto the deck surface. They light the deck for walking and sitting without throwing any light past the rail.
Solar under-rail lights are available with a remote panel that you mount in a sunny spot, with wires running to each fixture. This is the configuration that works, because the under-rail position is often shaded by the railing itself.
This is one of the best solutions for narrow yards because the light is entirely contained within your deck footprint. Nothing escapes to the fence or the neighbor’s window.
Tabletop and Ground-Level Lanterns
For ambient light at seating areas, skip the tall lamp post and use tabletop lanterns or ground-level lanterns placed on the patio surface. These put the light source at 12 to 24 inches, below the fence line, and the light is contained by the fixture housing.
A cluster of three solar lanterns on a patio table gives enough light to eat by without lighting the yard. A single lantern on the ground next to a chair gives enough light to read by. The light is intimate and close, which is the right scale for a narrow yard.
String Lights, If You Must
String lights are popular and I understand why. They are cheap, easy, and they look festive. But in a narrow yard, they are a problem. Strung fence-to-fest, they sit at the top of the fence line and glow into the neighbor’s windows. Strung along the fence, they are visible from above and they light the fence brightly enough to read by on the other side.
If you must use string lights, string them under a pergola or awning, where the structure contains the light. Keep them at least 2 feet below the fence line. Use warm white, 2700K, and the lowest density of bulbs you can find, 12-inch spacing rather than 6-inch.
Better yet, skip string lights entirely and use lanterns. The effect is warmer and more controlled.
Placement Strategy
The Centerline Principle
In a narrow yard, place your primary path lights along the centerline of the yard, not along the edges. Edge-mounted lights throw light sideways into the fence. Center-mounted lights throw light in a circle that stays mostly within the yard.
This is counterintuitive, because paths in narrow yards often run along one edge. If your path is along the edge, you have two choices. Move the path to the center, or use only downward-shielded fixtures that do not throw sideways.
If the path stays at the edge, use the lowest fixtures you can find, 8 to 12 inches, and place them on the yard side of the path, not the fence side. The light falls on the path and slightly into the yard, not on the fence.
The Zigzag for Depth
A straight line of lights down the center of a narrow yard makes the yard feel like a corridor. To avoid this, zigzag the lights. Place one slightly left, the next slightly right, the next slightly left. The staggered placement breaks the corridor effect and makes the yard feel wider.
The zigzag also means each light illuminates a slightly different part of the yard, which reduces the number of fixtures you need. Five zigzagged lights cover more ground than five in a straight line.
Lighting the Verticals Sparingly
A narrow yard has a lot of vertical surface, the fences on both sides, the house wall, the garage wall. Lighting these verticals can make the yard feel larger by pushing the walls outward visually. But it can also annoy the neighbors if done wrong.
If you light a fence, do it from below, with a fixture mounted at the base of the fence pointing up, and only on fence sections that do not have a neighbor’s window behind them. Use a narrow beam, 15 to 25 degrees, so the light hits the fence and stops rather than spilling over the top.
Even better, graze the fence rather than washing it. A grazing light is mounted tight against the fence, within 6 inches, and aimed along the fence surface. The light highlights the texture of the wood without bouncing off into the yard. This is subtle and effective.
Dealing With the Neighbor’s Windows
This deserves its own section because it is the issue I get called about most.
Identify the Problem Windows
Before you install anything, walk your yard at dusk and identify every neighbor’s window that has a sightline into your yard. Note the height, the angle, and whether the window is a bedroom, a bathroom, or a living space. Bedroom windows are the most sensitive, because people sleep there and stray light disrupts sleep.
The Shielding Test
Here is a test I do on every narrow yard installation. After placing fixtures, I go to the neighbor’s window, with permission, and look out at the yard from their perspective. If I can see a light source, it is a problem. If I can only see reflected light on the ground, it is acceptable.
You can approximate this test from your own yard. Stand at the property line, at the height of the neighbor’s window if possible, and look toward your fixtures. If you can see the bulb or LED directly, the neighbor can too. If you can only see the light on the ground, you are fine.
Fixtures That Solve the Problem
The fixtures that pass the window test are:
- Fully shielded path lights, where the bulb is hidden under a solid cap
- Recessed step lights, where the bulb is set back in a housing
- Under-rail deck lights, where the railing blocks the line of sight
- Tabletop lanterns, where the fence blocks the line of sight from above
- Downward-angled spot lights, where the bulb is aimed below horizontal
The fixtures that fail the window test are:
- Post cap lights on top of a fence
- String lights at the fence line
- Upward-facing flood lights
- Wall sconces mounted above the fence line
- Any fixture with a visible, unshielded bulb
Talking to the Neighbor
If you are unsure whether your planned lighting will bother a neighbor, talk to them before you install. Show them the fixtures, explain the placement, and ask if they have concerns. This is awkward but it prevents a worse conversation later.
I have found that neighbors are almost always fine with lighting if they are consulted first. They are rarely fine with lighting that appears suddenly and shines in their window. The consultation, not the lighting itself, is usually the deciding factor.
Power and Charging in a Narrow Yard
Narrow urban yards are often shaded. The fences block sun for part of the day, the house blocks sun for another part, and neighboring buildings may block it too. A yard that gets full sun at noon may be shaded by 3 PM.
Mapping the Sun
Before placing fixtures, spend a day in the yard and note where the sun falls at 9 AM, noon, 3 PM, and 6 PM. Mark the sunny spots. These are where your solar panels need to be, even if the light fixture itself is elsewhere.
In a narrow yard, the sunniest spots are usually the center of the yard at midday and the top of the fence line. The center is usable for path lights. The fence top is not, because of the window issue.
Remote Panels
For fixtures that need to be in the shade, use remote panel configurations. The panel mounts in a sunny spot, and a wire runs to the fixture in the shade. This is how you get light into shaded seating areas and under deck overhangs.
Run the wire along the fence bottom, secured with cable clips, and bury it where it crosses open ground. Use outdoor-rated wire and waterproof splices at every connection. A failed splice in a shaded, damp yard will kill the fixture within a season.
Battery Management in Shade
Shaded fixtures charge less, which means their batteries cycle deeper, which means the batteries die faster. Expect 12 to 18 months from a battery in a shaded yard, versus 24 to 36 months in a sunny yard.
Buy fixtures with replaceable batteries, and keep spares. Check the output in late fall, when the days are short and the sun is low. This is when marginal charging becomes insufficient, and you may need to move fixtures to sunnier spots for the winter.
A Narrow Yard Case Study
I lit a yard in a dense urban neighborhood last year that illustrates the approach. The yard was 18 feet wide and 35 feet deep, fenced on both sides, with a two-story house on one side and a one-story garage on the other. The neighbor’s bedroom window was on the second floor of the house next door, looking directly into the yard.
The homeowner wanted to use the yard for evening dinners and wanted enough light to navigate safely without annoying the neighbor.
I installed four low path lights, 14 inches tall, fully shielded, along a centerline path from the back door to a patio at the far end. The lights were staggered left and right of center to avoid the corridor effect.
At the patio, I placed two tabletop solar lanterns on the dining table and one ground-level lantern next to a chair. These provided the ambient light for eating and sitting.
Under the deck railing at the back door, I installed three under-rail solar lights with a remote panel mounted on the garage roof. These lit the deck for coming and going.

Mistakes to Avoid
Do not mount lights on top of the fence. This is the most common mistake and the most guaranteed to annoy neighbors. The fence top is exactly at the sightline of a second-floor window.
Do not use upward flood lights. They light the whole yard and the whole neighborhood. They are the wrong tool for a narrow space.
Do not use bright fixtures. In a small, enclosed yard, bright light bounces off every surface and creates glare. Use dimmer fixtures and more of them.
Do not light both fences. Light one side, or light neither, but lighting both creates a tunnel effect that makes the yard feel narrower.
Do not forget the gate. The gate is a transition point and needs a light. A single low path light at the gate, inside the yard, marks the entry without lighting the alley or sidewalk outside.

A narrow urban yard is a lighting puzzle, but the constraints make the design better. By forcing you to keep light low, directional, and contained, the yard’s geometry pushes you toward a lighting style that is intimate, layered, and respectful of the people living around you.
The goal is not to light the yard. The goal is to light the activities in the yard, the path, the table, the chair, and let the rest fall into shadow. Done well, a narrow yard at night feels like an outdoor room, enclosed and private, with just enough light to see the person across from you and the food in front of you. That is a worthier aim than any brightly lit fence could achieve.
