The reason to light your house numbers is not decoration. It is so the ambulance driver, the delivery driver, and the friend visiting for the first time can find your house at night. If your address light fails that test, it is a decoration, not a function. Most of them fail.

Number Size
This is the single most important factor, and it is the one most people get wrong. House numbers need to be at least 4 inches tall to be readable from the road at 25 mph. Numbers 3 inches tall are readable at 15 mph. Numbers 2 inches tall are readable only when you are stopped in front of the house.
For a house set back 30 feet or more from the road, the numbers should be 5 to 6 inches tall. For a house set back 50 feet or more, 6 inches is the minimum and 8 inches is better. Number Contrast

This style looks more modern and less institutional than the plaque. The numbers float on the wall during the day, which is a cleaner look. The legibility is good but not as good as the backlit plaque, because the light is coming from the number rather than through a cutout.

Brightness: How Much Is Enough
Address lights do not need to be bright. They need to be bright enough to read the numbers at the required distance, and no brighter. Too bright creates glare that actually reduces legibility.

The runtime requirement is different from other solar lights. An address light needs to be on from dusk to about midnight, not all night. Emergency responders and delivery drivers are not looking for your house at 3 AM. If your address light runs from 8 PM to midnight, that covers the practical use case. This is easier on the battery than an all night path light, which is why even small solar address lights can hit the runtime target.
Mounting and Placement
Where you mount the address light is as important as what you buy. The wrong placement makes a good light useless.
Wall Placement
Mount the address light on the wall facing the road, not the wall facing your driveway. If your driveway is on the side of the house, a wall mounted address light facing the driveway is invisible from the road. The light needs to face the direction from which people approach.
The mounting height should be eye level for a person standing at the door (about 5 to 6 feet), or higher if the house is set back (so the light is visible over landscaping). Avoid mounting under a porch roof, because the solar panel will not get sun. Mount on an exposed wall.
Post Placement
For a post mounted light at the road, place the post at the edge of your property line, where the driveway meets the road. The post should be 4 to 5 feet tall, with the numbers facing oncoming traffic. Mailbox Mounting
Some address lights mount on the mailbox post at the road. This works if your mailbox is at the end of your driveway and is visible from the road. Do not mount the address light on a gate or fence that is sometimes open. When the gate is open, the light is hidden. Mount on a fixed surface.
Do not mount the address light behind a tree or shrub. Landscaping grows. A light that is visible when installed may be hidden by a growing shrub in two years. Trim landscaping back from the address light annually.
Do not mount the address light at the front door if the front door is not visible from the road. Side entry houses, houses with deep porches, and houses with front facing garages all have front doors that are not visible from the street. Mount the light where it can be seen.

For a house 30 feet from the road, with the front wall visible from the street: a backlit plaque style address light, 12 to 16 inches wide, with 4 to 5 inch numbers, warm white LED, mounted at 6 feet on the front wall. Budget thirty to sixty dollars. This is the most common case and the easiest to solve well.
For a house 50 to 100 feet from the road, or with the front wall partially obscured: a post mounted address light at the end of the driveway, 4 to 5 feet tall, with 5 to 6 inch numbers on two sides, warm white. Budget eighty to one hundred fifty dollars plus the post install. This is the right answer for rural and suburban houses set back from the road.
For a modern house where the address needs to look architectural: individual illuminated numbers, 5 to 6 inches, brushed aluminum or black, with a shared remote solar panel on a cable. Budget one hundred to two hundred dollars for the set. The look is worth it if the house design calls for it.

If the answer is less than 50 feet, your address light is failing its primary job.
The fixes, in order of impact: larger numbers, brighter or better distributed light, better placement (closer to the road, higher, less obscured). The first fix (larger numbers) solves most problems. A 4 inch number is readable at 50 feet. A 6 inch number is readable at 100 feet. An 8 inch number is readable at 150 feet. Bigger numbers are almost always the answer, and they are cheap.
