Deck post cap lights are one of the easiest solar lighting upgrades you can make, and one of the most satisfying. You take a blank deck railing, add a light to each post, and by nightfall the whole deck is framed in a warm glow. No electrician, no conduit, no transformer, no trenching. The work is measuring, fitting, and securing, and it is well within the reach of anyone who can use a tape measure and a screwdriver.

What You Are Working With
Deck Post Sizes
Deck posts in the United States are nominally 4×4 or 6×6. The actual dimensions are smaller. A 4×4 post is 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches. A 6×6 post is 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches.
Post cap lights are sized to fit these actual dimensions. A cap labeled 4×4 fits a 3.5-inch post. A cap labeled 6×6 fits a 5.5-inch post. This sounds obvious, but I have seen people buy 4×4 caps for 6×6 posts and vice versa, because they measured the post as “about 4 inches” and bought the matching label.
Measure your posts before ordering. Use a tape measure and get the actual dimension to the nearest 1/8 inch. Order caps to fit.
Post Cap Styles
There are two basic styles of solar post cap.
The first is the slip-over cap, which has a sleeve that fits over the post. The sleeve is typically 1 to 2 inches deep. The cap sits on top of the post, with the sleeve hiding the post end. This is the most common style and the easiest to install.
The second is the surface-mount cap, which has a flat base that sits on top of the post. The base is secured with screws through the base into the post top. This style is used when the post has a decorative cap already, or when the post is too large for a slip-over sleeve.
For a standard deck with square posts, the slip-over style is the way to go. It is simpler, more secure, and looks better.
Solar Panel Configurations
The solar panel on a post cap can be integrated into the top of the cap, facing up, or it can be a separate panel on a lead wire. The integrated panel is standard and works well if the deck is in a sunny location. The separate panel is needed if the deck is covered or shaded, because you can mount the panel in the sun and run the wire to the cap.
Most installations use the integrated panel. If your deck has a roof or pergola over it, you need the separate panel version, and you need to plan for running the wire.
Step 1: Inspect and Prepare the Posts

Post Condition
The top of the post should be flat and clean. If the post has weathered, the top may be rounded, split, or soft with rot. A cap on a rotten post will not sit level and will not stay secured.
If the top is rotten, cut it off with a saw until you reach sound wood. This may shorten the post by an inch or two, which is usually fine. If the rot extends more than a few inches down, the post needs replacement, not a cap light.

Post Spacing and Count
Count your posts and note the spacing. Standard deck posts are 4 to 6 feet apart on the railing. You want a cap on every post, so the count of caps equals the count of posts. Do not skip posts to save money, because a gap in the row reads as a mistake, not a design choice.
Step 2: Measure and Order Caps
Measure each post. Even if you think they are all the same size, measure each one. Deck posts can vary by 1/8 inch or more, especially if the deck was built by hand rather than from a kit.
Note any posts that are a different size. You may need a mix of 4×4 and 6×6 caps, or you may need to shim a cap that is slightly too large.
Ordering Tips
Order a few more caps than you have posts. One or two will arrive damaged, or you will crack one during installation, or you will decide to add a cap to a post you originally skipped. Having spares saves a second order and a second shipping charge.
Order replacement batteries at the same time. Post cap batteries last 18 to 24 months, and having replacements on hand means you can swap them when the lights start dimming, rather than waiting for a shipment.
Choose a finish that matches your deck hardware. If your railings are black, order black caps. If your hardware is bronze, order bronze. A mismatched finish is the most common aesthetic complaint I hear after an installation.
Step 3: Test the Caps Before Installation
This step is skipped by most people, and it is the step that saves the most time. Before you mount anything, take each cap out of the box, pull the battery tab if there is one, and set all the caps in the sun for a day.
Why Pre-Charge
Solar caps ship with a partially charged battery, or with a battery that has been sitting in a warehouse for months and is nearly dead. If you install a dead cap, it will not light that night, and you will not know if the cap is defective or just uncharged. Pre-charging for a day tells you which caps work and which are dead on arrival.
Checking for Defects
After the day in the sun, take the caps into a dark room or cover them with a cloth. They should light up within 30 seconds of being darkened. Any cap that does not light is defective and should be returned.
Check the light color. All the caps should be the same color temperature. Occasionally a manufacturer ships a mixed batch, and one cap is 3000K while the rest are 2700K. This is visible once installed and it is annoying. Catch it now, before installation.
Step 4: Install the First Cap as a Test
Do not install all the caps at once. Install one, check it at dusk, and confirm you are happy with the placement, the angle, and the look. Then proceed with the rest.
Positioning the Cap
Slide the cap over the post. It should fit snugly, with the sleeve fully engaged. If the cap is loose, it will rock in the wind and eventually fall off. If the cap is too tight, it may crack the post or the cap itself.
A loose cap can be shimmed with thin strips of adhesive-backed foam weatherstripping applied to the inside of the sleeve. This fills the gap and cushions the cap against the post. Two strips, on opposite sides, are usually enough.
A tight cap should be sanded, not forced. Sand the inside of the sleeve with 80-grit paper until the cap slides on with firm hand pressure. Forcing a tight cap will crack the sleeve.
Securing the Cap
Most slip-over caps are secured with screws through the sleeve into the post. Use the screws that come with the cap, which are typically small stainless steel pan-head screws, 3/4 to 1 inch long.
Pre-drill the screw holes with a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw. This prevents the wood from splitting and makes the screw go in straight. Do not skip this step, especially in hardwood posts like cedar or redwood, which will twist an un-pre-drilled screw.
Drive one screw on each side of the cap, for a total of four screws. The screws should be snug, not overtightened. Overtightening dimples the cap sleeve and can crack it.
Adhesive as an Alternative
If you do not want to use screws, or if the post is hollow vinyl, use construction adhesive. Apply a bead of marine silicone or polyurethane adhesive inside the sleeve before sliding the cap on. The adhesive holds the cap in place and seals the joint against water.
Adhesive-only installations are less secure than screw installations in high wind. If your deck is exposed, use screws or combine adhesive with screws.
Step 5: Install the Remaining Caps
Once the first cap is on and you are happy with it, proceed with the rest. The process is the same for each cap.
Work your way around the deck in order, installing each cap as you go. This keeps you organized and ensures you do not miss a post.
Maintaining Consistency
As you install, check that each cap is oriented the same way. If the cap has a rectangular panel, all the panels should face the same direction, typically south. If the cap has a decorative feature on one side, all the features should face the same way.
A row of caps with random orientations looks sloppy. Take the extra 10 seconds per cap to align them.
Dealing With Corner Posts
Corner posts may be larger than standard posts, especially if the deck has a railing corner that is structural. Measure corner posts separately and order caps to fit.
If a corner post is 6×6 and the line posts are 4×4, the corner cap will be larger. This is fine and often looks intentional, marking the corners as visual anchors.
Step 6: Check at Dusk
After all the caps are installed, wait for dusk and observe. You are checking several things.
Lighting Consistency
All the caps should be the same brightness. A cap that is significantly dimmer than its neighbors has a low battery, a dirty panel, or a defective cell. Note which caps are dim and investigate the next day.
Coverage
The light from the caps should adequately mark the deck perimeter. If there are dark spots between posts, you may need additional lighting, such as rail-mounted step lights or under-rail lights, to fill the gaps. Post caps alone may not be enough for a wide deck.
Panel Orientation
Check that the panels are facing the right direction. If a cap is dimmer than expected, it may be because the panel faces north and is not getting enough sun. Some caps have adjustable panels that can be re-aimed. Others do not, and you may need to rotate the entire cap on the post.
Step 7: Weatherproofing
Deck posts take a lot of weather. Rain, snow, sun, and freeze-thaw all attack the post-cap joint. A few steps extend the life of the installation.
Sealing the Joint
If you installed with screws, water can enter the screw holes and the gap between the cap sleeve and the post. Run a thin bead of clear silicone caulk around the bottom of the cap sleeve where it meets the post. This seals the joint and prevents water infiltration.
Do not caulk the weep holes, if the cap has them. Weep holes allow condensation inside the cap to drain. Caulking them traps moisture and corrodes the battery.
Checking the Battery Compartment
The battery compartment on a post cap is usually accessed from underneath, by removing a small cover. Check that the cover is screwed down tight and that the gasket, if present, is seated. A loose cover lets water in and kills the battery within weeks.
Apply silicone grease to the gasket before closing the compartment. This keeps the gasket soft and improves the seal.
Preparing for Winter
If you live in a climate with hard freezes, consider removing the batteries from the caps in late fall. Cold does not damage the battery significantly, but a battery left in a cap through a freeze-thaw cycle may corrode if any moisture has entered the compartment.
If you remove the batteries, store them in a cool, dry place indoors. Label them by post location so you can return them to the same cap in spring.

Post cap lights need periodic attention. Here is the schedule I recommend.
Monthly: Wipe the solar panels with a damp cloth to remove dust and pollen. Check for any caps that have come loose or shifted.
Seasonally: Check the battery compartments for water intrusion, especially after the first rain of the season. Tighten any loose screws. Re-caulk any joints where the sealant has cracked.
Annually: Replace all batteries at the same time, even if some still work. Mixing new and old batteries in the same installation leads to inconsistent lighting, because the old batteries dim sooner. Replacing all at once keeps the row uniform.
Every two to three years: Inspect the caps for UV damage. Plastic caps yellow and crack. Metal caps may have finish wear. Replace caps that are failing before they fall off and break.
A Note on Aesthetics
Post cap lights are visible during the day as well as at night. The cap sits on top of the post, which is at eye level when you are on the deck. The finish and shape of the cap matter as much as the light output.
Choose a cap that matches the style of your deck. A formal deck with turned balusters wants a cap with some detail, maybe a pyramid top or a finial. A modern deck with cable railing wants a flat, minimal cap. A rustic deck with cedar posts wants a cap in a weathered finish.
The light is the function, but the cap is the form. Both matter. A cap that looks great in the day and lights up at night is the goal. A cap that is ugly in the day but bright at night is a compromise. A cap that is beautiful in the day but dim at night is a failure. Aim for both.
