Every plant tag at the nursery lists a hardiness zone. Most gardeners glance at it, see a number, and either buy the plant or do not. Few understand what the number actually represents, where it comes from, or why it is a rough guide rather than a guarantee. I gardened for years on that surface understanding before I dug into what the zones really measure and where they fall short.
This is a guide to USDA hardiness zones, what they tell you, what they do not, and how to use them to choose plants that actually survive your winters.
What a Hardiness Zone Is
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into zones based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, the lowest temperature that typically occurs each winter in a given location. The zones run in 10-degree Fahrenheit increments, with each zone further divided into “a” and “b” 5-degree sub-zones.
The current map, updated in 2023, runs from Zone 1, below minus 50 degrees, in northern Alaska, to Zone 13, above 60 degrees, in Puerto Rico. Most of the contiguous United States falls between Zone 3 and Zone 10.
When a plant tag says “Zone 5,” it means the plant is expected to survive winters where the average minimum temperature is between minus 10 and minus 20 degrees. A plant rated Zone 5 to 8 should survive winters in Zones 5, 6, 7, and 8, but not the colder winters of Zone 4 or the warmer winters of Zone 9, where it may not get enough winter chill.
Important Word: Average
The critical word in that definition is “average.” The zone is based on the average annual minimum over a period of years, currently 30 years of data. In any given winter, the actual low can be several degrees colder or warmer than the average. A Zone 6 location with an average minimum of minus 5 degrees might hit minus 15 in a cold year, which is Zone 5 territory.
This is why a plant rated for your zone can still die in a hard winter. The zone is a probability, not a guarantee. It tells you what usually happens, not what will happen this year.
How the Zones Are Calculated
The USDA calculates zones using temperature data from thousands of weather stations, averaged over 30 years. The 2023 update used data from 1991 through 2020, a warmer period than the previous baseline, which is why the new map shifted many locations a half-zone warmer.
The calculation is purely about winter low temperature. It does not factor in:
- Summer heat. A plant may survive the winter in your zone but roast in summer. The American Horticultural Society has a separate Heat Zone Map for this, which is less commonly used but worth knowing about.
- Humidity. A plant that thrives in dry Zone 6 may rot in humid Zone 6.
- Rainfall. A desert plant and a rainforest plant may share a zone rating and have opposite water needs.
- Soil. A plant that wants acidic sandy soil will not thrive in alkaline clay, regardless of zone.
- Day length. Plants adapted to northern summers with long days may not perform well in southern zones with shorter day lengths.
- Elevation and microclimate. Two locations in the same zone can have very different actual conditions.
The zone is one factor among many. It tells you whether a plant is likely to survive your winter, nothing more.
The Zones Are Shifting
The 2023 map moved about half the United States a half-zone warmer compared to the 2012 map. This is not a political statement, it is a reflection of the temperature data. Winters are, on average, warmer now than they were 30 years ago.
What This Means for Gardeners
If you garden in a location that moved from Zone 6a to Zone 7a, plants rated to Zone 7 that previously were marginal may now be reliable. This opens up possibilities. Gardeners in places that were Zone 5 are now growing plants that once required Zone 6, including some crape myrtles, camellias, and southern magnolias.
The shift also means that some plants that relied on cold winters are struggling. Plants that need a long winter chill, like many fruit trees, may not get enough cold hours in warming zones and produce poorly. Lilacs, which need cold winters, are declining in the southern parts of their historical range.
Do Not Over-Reach
The temptation, when your zone shifts warmer, is to push the envelope and plant things that are marginal. Sometimes this works. Sometimes a single cold winter kills the experiment, and you lose a plant you invested years in. The zone shift is real, but the averages still include cold years. Plant a zone-warmer experiment if you want, but do not plant your whole yard with marginal plants. Keep the backbone hardy.
Microclimates: The Zone Within Your Zone
Your yard is not a single zone. It is a collection of microclimates, small areas that are warmer or colder than the surrounding area. Understanding microclimates lets you grow plants that are nominally marginal, and warns you where not to put tender plants.
Warm Microclimates
- South-facing walls. A south or southwest-facing wall absorbs heat during the day and radiates it at night. The soil near the wall stays warmer, and plants there may survive a zone colder than their rating. This is where you put the marginal plant you want to try.
- Near the foundation. The house leaks heat, and the soil near the foundation stays warmer than the open yard. Plants against the house survive cold that would kill them ten feet away.
- Top of a slope. Cold air drains downhill, so the top of a slope is warmer than the bottom. A south-facing slope is the warmest spot in many yards.
- Under evergreen canopy. The canopy traps radiant heat from the ground and buffers temperature swings.
Cold Microclimates
- Bottom of a slope or valley. Cold air flows downhill and pools in low spots, called frost pockets. These areas can be a full zone colder than the surrounding area. Do not put early-blooming plants here, they will get zapped by late frost.
- North-facing walls. Shaded and cold, these are the spots for plants that need cool conditions or that you want to delay blooming to avoid frost.
- Open exposed ground. No protection from wind or radiational cooling, these areas hit the zone temperature or colder on clear winter nights.
Using Microclimates
I have a south-facing brick wall that is a full zone warmer than the rest of my yard. Against that wall, I grow plants rated a zone warmer than my official zone, and they survive. Ten feet away, in the open yard, the same plants would die. The wall is the difference.
Map your yard’s microclimates. Walk it on a cold winter morning and feel where the cold pockets are. Watch where the snow melts first in spring. These observations tell you more than the zone number on the map.
Reading Plant Tags and Catalogs
When a plant is rated “Zone 5-8,” here is how to interpret it:
- The low number, Zone 5, is the coldest zone where the plant is expected to survive winter. In Zone 4, it will likely die.
- The high number, Zone 8, is the warmest zone where the plant performs well. In Zone 9, it may not get enough winter chill, may roast in summer, or may simply not thrive.
Some plants have only a low zone listed, meaning they survive cold but tolerate heat. Others, particularly bulbs, may have a high zone limit because they need cold winters to break dormancy.
“Hardy to Zone X” Versus “Grows in Zone X”
These phrases mean different things. “Hardy to Zone 5” means the plant survives the winter in Zone 5. “Grows in Zones 5-9” means the plant is suited to that range. A plant can be hardy to a zone but not perform well there, if the summer is too hot or the season too short.
Beyond Zone: What Else to Consider
Zone tells you about winter survival. It does not tell you whether the plant will thrive. For that, consider:
Heat Tolerance
The AHS Heat Zone Map rates zones based on the average number of days above 86 degrees. A plant rated for your winter zone may not tolerate your summer heat. This is why plants from cool climates, like delphiniums and primulas, struggle in the South even though the winter zone is acceptable.
Chill Hours
Many fruit trees and spring-blooming bulbs need a certain number of hours below 45 degrees in winter to break dormancy and flower properly. A warm-winter zone may not provide enough chill, and the plant will leaf out poorly or not bloom. This is why you cannot grow cherries in Miami, even though the winter is mild enough for the tree to survive.
Day Length Sensitivity
Some plants are sensitive to day length and will not perform outside their adapted latitude. Onions are the classic example, classified as long-day, short-day, or intermediate. Plant a long-day onion in the South and it will not bulb properly.
Soil and Moisture
A plant suited to your zone but not your soil will fail. Always match the plant to the soil, the moisture, and the light, not just the temperature.
Pushing the Zone
Gardeners love to push zones, growing plants nominally too tender for their area. It is a legitimate hobby and sometimes it works. Here are the strategies:
Start Small and Cheap
Do not buy a 200 dollar tree that is a zone too tender and plant it as a focal point. Buy a small, cheap version first. If it survives a few winters, then invest in a larger specimen.
Use Microclimates
Put the marginal plant in the warmest spot you have, against a south wall, under an overhang, near the foundation. Give it every advantage.
Provide Winter Protection
Wrap tender plants in burlap. Mulch heavily around the roots. Use a cold frame or row cover for the worst cold. These interventions can gain you a half-zone or more.
Accept Loss
Pushing zones means losing plants. If you cannot accept that, stay within your zone. If you can, the successes are satisfying.
The Heat Zone Map: The Other Half of the Story
The USDA zone tells you about winter cold, which is what kills plants in most of the country. But in the South and Southwest, summer heat is the bigger limiter, and the USDA zone says nothing about it. A plant rated to Zone 9 might survive a Florida winter easily and cook to death in a Florida summer.
The American Horticultural Society developed a Heat Zone Map to address this. It divides the country into 12 zones based on the average number of days per year above 86 degrees, the temperature at which most plants begin to suffer heat stress. Zone 1 has fewer than 1 day above 86. Zone 12 has more than 210 days.
Most plant tags do not list heat zones, which is a gap. But the information exists, and if you live in a hot climate, it is worth looking up. A plant that is rated hardy to your winter zone but is rated to a lower heat zone than yours will struggle, no matter how mild your winter is.
Combining the Two Maps
The most complete picture comes from combining USDA and AHS zones. A plant rated “USDA 5-8, AHS 4-8” will survive winters in Zones 5 through 8 and tolerate summers in heat Zones 4 through 8. If you are in USDA Zone 7 but AHS Zone 9, that plant may survive your winter but suffer in your summer.
For most gardeners in the temperate United States, the USDA zone is sufficient because winter cold is the main limiter. For gardeners in the South, the heat zone matters as much or more. Know both numbers for your location.
Chill Hours and Why They Matter
A related concept that the zone maps do not capture is chill hours, the number of hours below 45 degrees Fahrenheit during the dormant season. Many fruit trees and spring-blooming bulbs require a certain number of chill hours to break dormancy and flower properly.
If a plant needs 800 chill hours and your climate provides only 400, the plant may survive but will not bloom well or set fruit. This is the problem with growing apples, cherries, and peaches in the deep South. The winter is warm enough that the tree survives, but not cold enough to satisfy its chill requirement, and the tree produces poorly or not at all.
Conversely, a plant bred for low chill, like a southern blueberry variety, may not perform well in a cold climate even though the winter zone is acceptable, because it may break dormancy too early and get zapped by a late frost.
If you are growing fruit trees, look up the chill hour requirement and compare it to your local average. Your state extension service can tell you the typical chill hours for your area. This is one case where the zone number alone is genuinely misleading, and a gardener who buys a tree based on zone alone may wait years for fruit that never comes.
Regional Plant Selection: Real-World Examples
To make this concrete, here are some plants that thrive in specific zone ranges, and some that commonly fail when pushed outside their range.
Zone 3 to 4, Cold Northern Climates
Reliable choices: serviceberry, ninebark, northern highbush blueberry, spruce, fir, tamarack, larch, peony, daylily, hosta, Russian sage, ornamental onion. Vegetables with short seasons: radishes, lettuce, peas, kale, broccoli.
Common failures: butterfly bush, often rated to Zone 5 but dies to the ground in Zone 4 and may not survive, crape myrtle, figs unless heavily protected, lavender in humid Zone 4 summers.
Zone 5 to 6, Temperate
This is the widest range and the easiest to garden in. Most nursery stock is suited here. Reliable choices: the full range of fruit trees, most perennials, most ornamental shrubs. The main caution is late frost damage to early-blooming fruit trees, which is a weather problem more than a zone problem.
Zone 7 to 8, Mild Winter
Reliable choices: camellia, gardenia, crape myrtle, southern magnolia, fig, pomegranate, many Mediterranean herbs. The challenge is heat, not cold. Choose heat-tolerant vegetables and plant them early enough to harvest before summer heat.
Common failures: plants that need cold winters, like many lilacs and some apple varieties, perform poorly. Delphiniums and other cool-climate perennials struggle in humid heat.
Zone 9 and Above, Subtropical
A completely different plant palette. Tropicals, citrus, avocados, bougainvillea, hibiscus. The garden calendar is reversed, with the active growing season in winter and the off-season in summer when it is too hot.
The Value of Local Knowledge
After all this discussion of maps and numbers, the most reliable source of plant selection information is local observation. Visit established gardens in your area. See what is growing well after years. Talk to gardeners who have been in the area longer than you have. The plants thriving in a neighbor’s yard are a better guide than any map.
Local nurseries, not big box stores, are valuable because they stock plants suited to the local climate. A nursery that has been in business for 20 years in your town has learned through experience what survives. Their plant selection reflects that knowledge. The big box store ships the same inventory nationwide, which is why you will see zone-inappropriate plants for sale in every store.
When to Trust the Zone and When Not To
Trust the zone for the backbone of your landscape, the trees and major shrubs that define the yard. These are long-term investments, and a plant that dies after ten years because of a cold winter is a real loss. Stay within your zone for these.
Experiment at the edges. Perennials are cheap and easy to replace. Annuals are, by definition, not about winter survival. Tender plants in containers can be moved indoors. This is where you push.
And remember that the zone is a starting point, not an answer. The plant tag tells you what usually survives. Your yard, your soil, your care, and your weather tell you what actually does. The map is a guide. Observation is the real teacher.
