Designing Solar Lighting for Courtyard Gardens

A courtyard garden is a specific lighting challenge that most guides do not address, because it is not like a regular yard. A courtyard is an enclosed outdoor space, surrounded on three or four sides by walls (house walls, garden walls, or a combination). The enclosure is what makes it a courtyard, and the enclosure is what makes lighting it hard.

I have lit maybe eight courtyard gardens, ranging from a tiny 12 by 12 urban courtyard to a sprawling 40 by 60 Mediterranean style courtyard. The problems are the same at every scale: the walls reflect light in unexpected ways, the enclosure traps glare, the seating area needs usable light but the walls magnify every lumen, and the solar panels (which need sun) are often shaded by the very walls that define the space. This guide is about solving those problems.

Why Courtyards Are Different From Open Yards

In an open yard, light travels outward and dissipates into the dark. If you put a 100 lumen light on a post, the light spreads in all directions and the brightness falls off with distance. The far corners of the yard are dark, which is fine, because dark corners are part of the design.

In a courtyard, the light does not dissipate. It hits a wall and reflects back. A 100 lumen light in a courtyard illuminates the wall it is aimed at, reflects off that wall onto the opposite wall, and reflects again. The space fills with bounced light, which sounds good but is actually the problem. Bounced light is harsh, directionless, and it kills the contrast that makes lighting design work.

The other difference is that courtyards are viewed from inside the house. The courtyard is typically surrounded by the house on one or more sides, with windows looking out. Every light in the courtyard is visible from inside, and every reflection on the walls is visible from inside. A light that looks fine from the courtyard itself can glare into the living room windows, which is a common complaint.

The third difference is scale. Courtyards are small. A 20 by 20 courtyard is a generous one. A 12 by 12 is common. In a small space, every fixture is close to the viewer, which means every fixture is visible and every flaw is apparent. A path light that looks fine in a 100 foot yard looks clunky in a 12 foot courtyard.

The Reflection Problem in Detail

Here is what happens when you put a typical solar flood light in a courtyard. The flood is mounted on one wall, aimed at the opposite wall. The opposite wall is 15 feet away. The flood produces 200 lumens in a 120 degree beam. The beam hits the opposite wall and lights it brightly (maybe 50 lux at the center). The wall reflects about 70 percent of the light back into the courtyard. That reflected light is now 140 lumens, scattered in all directions, filling the courtyard with a directionless glow.

The result: the wall opposite the light is brightly lit (good), the courtyard is filled with bounced glare (bad), and the seating area in the middle has no usable light because the bounced light is too even to cast useful shadows. You can see the space, but you cannot see detail, and the glare is uncomfortable.

The fix is not a dimmer light. A dimmer light just makes the whole space dim. The fix is controlled light direction: aim the light at a surface that absorbs rather than reflects, use baffles to control spill, and use multiple low-output lights from different angles rather than one bright light from one angle.

The Multi-Angle Principle

The core principle of courtyard lighting is: light from multiple angles at low output, rather than from one angle at high output. This is the opposite of the open yard approach, where one bright light from one direction is often fine.

In a 20 by 20 courtyard with seating in the center, instead of one 200 lumen flood on a wall, use four 50 lumen fixtures, one on each wall, all aimed down at the seating area. Each light contributes a quarter of the illumination, from a different direction. The combined light is 200 lumens (same total) but it is even and shadowless, because the multiple angles fill in each other’s shadows.

The multiple angles also reduce the reflection problem. Each light is aimed at the seating area, not at the opposite wall, so less light hits the walls and more light hits the people and the table. The walls are lit only by the spill, which is gentle, rather than by a direct beam, which is harsh.

For solar, the multi-angle approach is practical because each light is independent. You do not need to wire four lights to a single transformer. You place four solar fixtures, each with its own panel and battery, on the four walls. The cost is higher (four fixtures instead of one) but the result is much better.

The Downlight Advantage

In a courtyard, downlighting is usually better than uplighting or horizontal lighting. Downlighting aims the light at the floor and the seating, which is where you want it. The walls receive only the soft spill, which defines the enclosure without glaring.

Downlighting in a courtyard means mounting fixtures high (on the wall, under the eave, or on a pergola) and aiming them down at a 30 to 45 degree angle. The fixtures should have shields or snoots to control the spill, so the light goes down, not out into the eyes of people sitting below.

The challenge with solar downlighting is the panel. A fixture mounted high under an eave is often shaded by the eave, so the integrated panel does not charge. The solution is a remote panel on a cable, mounted on the roof or on a sunny wall, with the cable run to the fixture. This is the standard approach for courtyard solar downlighting, and it is worth the extra cost.

Lighting the Seating Area

The seating area is the functional heart of the courtyard. This is where people sit, eat, talk, and read. The lighting here needs to be usable, not just decorative. You need to be able to see the food on the plate and the face of the person across the table.

For a seating area in a courtyard, the target illumination is about 30 to 50 lux at the table surface. This is bright enough to read and eat by, dim enough to feel intimate. Achieving this with solar requires careful fixture choice and placement.

Overhead String Lights

The most effective seating area light in a courtyard is overhead string lights, run from wall to wall above the seating. The string lights create a ceiling of soft light, which defines the seating area as a room and provides even, downward illumination to the table.

Solar string lights work well here because the courtyard walls provide ready anchor points. Run a string from one wall to the opposite wall, about 8 to 9 feet high, with the bulbs spaced 12 to 18 inches apart. The bulbs should be warm white (2700K), 10 to 20 lumens each, in a G40 or S14 style. A single 48 foot string is enough for a 20 by 20 courtyard.

The panel goes on the sunniest wall or on the roof, with the cable run to the string. The string itself is the light source, mounted overhead, casting even light down on the seating. This is the single most effective courtyard seating light, and it should be the first thing you install.

Tabletop Lanterns

Supplement the string lights with 2 to 4 tabletop lanterns on the seating table. The lanterns add a warm, flickering glow at eye level, which the string lights (overhead) do not provide. The combination of overhead string light and tabletop lantern light is the classic courtyard dining setup, and it works.

Use metal cage lanterns with flicker LEDs, warm white, 10 to 15 lumens each. Place them in the center of the table and at the ends. The lanterns are visible, which is fine in a courtyard, because the courtyard is an intimate space where visible light sources are part of the atmosphere.

A Task Light at the Grill or Prep Area

If the courtyard has a grill or a food prep area, add a dedicated task light there. A small solar flood (100 to 200 lumens) mounted on the wall behind the grill, aimed at the cooking surface, gives enough light to cook by. This light should be separate from the seating area light, so you can turn it on only when cooking.

Lighting the Walls

The walls define the courtyard, and they need some light to read as enclosure rather than as a dark void. But the wall lighting must be subtle, to avoid the reflection problem.

The approach: graze the walls with a low wash of light, rather than blasting them with a flood. A wall wash is a wide, even beam that lights the wall surface uniformly, revealing the texture (stone, brick, stucco) without creating hotspots.

For a solar wall wash, use a wide beam fixture (120 degrees or wider) mounted close to the wall, aimed along the wall surface rather than at it. The light grazes the wall, picking up texture, and falls off quickly into the courtyard. This is the opposite of a flood aimed at the wall from across the courtyard, which creates a bright hotspot and harsh reflection.

A 30 to 50 lumen solar fixture, mounted 6 to 12 inches from the wall, aimed along the wall, produces a gentle wash that defines the enclosure without glaring. One fixture every 8 to 10 feet of wall is enough. For a 20 by 20 courtyard (80 feet of perimeter wall), that is 8 to 10 wall wash fixtures.

The color temperature for wall washes should match the wall material. Stone and brick want 2700K to 3000K (warm). White stucco wants 3000K (slightly cooler, to avoid yellowing the white). Concrete wants 3000K to 3500K. Wood wants 2700K (warm).

Lighting the Planting

Courtyard gardens usually have planting in beds along the walls, or in containers. The planting softens the hard enclosure and adds life to the space. Lighting the planting is part of the courtyard design, but it must be done with restraint.

The approach: uplight a few key plants, rather than lighting all the planting. A single specimen plant (a small tree, a large shrub, a climber on a trellis) can be uplit with one solar spotlight, 50 to 100 lumens, warm white, placed at the base. The uplit plant becomes a focal point in the courtyard, drawing the eye and adding vertical interest.

Avoid lighting every plant. A courtyard with 10 uplit plants looks like a garden center. A courtyard with 2 uplit plants looks designed. The restraint is especially important in a courtyard, because the walls amplify the light and the effect of multiple uplights is multiplied by the reflections.

For container plants, a small solar spotlight at the base of the container, aimed up through the foliage, lights the plant from below. Choose 2 or 3 key containers to light, and leave the rest dark.

The Panel Problem in Enclosed Spaces

The biggest practical challenge of solar courtyard lighting is the panels. A courtyard is enclosed by walls, which means much of the courtyard is in shade for part or all of the day. The solar panels need sun, and the courtyard may not provide it.

Here is the typical shading pattern. A courtyard with 8 foot walls on the south, east, and west gets direct sun only in the middle of the day (about 11 AM to 2 PM in summer, less in winter). The north wall is always shaded. The floor of the courtyard gets sun for a few hours, the walls get sun for a few hours each.

For integrated panel fixtures (path lights, post lights), this means the panel gets maybe 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, which is marginal for charging. The fixtures will work in summer but struggle in winter.

For remote panel fixtures, the solution is to put the panel on the outside of the courtyard, on the roof of the house, or on a wall that gets full sun. The cable runs through a weep hole or over the wall to the fixture inside the courtyard. This is more work but it is the only way to get reliable charging in a shaded courtyard.

Plan the panel placement before buying fixtures. Walk the courtyard at 10 AM, noon, and 3 PM, and note where the sun falls. The sunny spots are where the panels go. If there are no sunny spots inside the courtyard, all the fixtures need remote panels, which adds cost and complexity.

A Sample Courtyard Lighting Plan

To make this concrete, here is a lighting plan for a 20 by 20 courtyard with seating in the center, planting beds along the walls, and walls on all four sides (house on one side, garden walls on three sides).

Seating Area

  • 1 string of solar cafe lights, 48 feet, warm white, run wall to wall above the seating at 8 feet high. Panel on the south wall, full sun.
  • 3 tabletop lanterns on the seating table, warm white flicker.

Walls

  • 8 wall wash fixtures (2 per wall), 30 lumens each, warm white, mounted 6 inches from the wall, aimed along the wall. Remote panels on the roof, 2 cables run to each pair of fixtures.

Planting

  • 2 solar spotlights uplighting specimen plants in the corners, 80 lumens each, warm white. Panels on the adjacent wall, full sun for part of the day.

Total

  • 14 fixtures, about 700 lumens total, distributed across 4 lighting layers (overhead, tabletop, wall wash, accent).

The total lumen output is modest for a 400 square foot space (about 1.75 lumens per square foot), but the multi-angle distribution and the layering make it feel complete. The seating area has usable light from the string and the lanterns. The walls are defined by the washes. The planting has two focal points. The space feels lit, not blasted.

The cost for this plan, using mid-range solar fixtures with remote panels, is about 400 to 700 dollars. The remote panels and the cables are a significant part of the cost, because most fixtures ship with integrated panels. You may have to buy remote panel versions specifically, which are more expensive.

Common Courtyard Lighting Mistakes

Mistake: One bright flood in the corner. This is the default bad courtyard lighting. The flood lights one wall brightly, glares into the seating area, and leaves the rest of the courtyard dark. Replace it with multiple low-output fixtures from different angles.

Mistake: Uplighting all the walls. Uplighting the walls creates dramatic grazing, but in a courtyard the uplight also shines into the sky and into the upper windows of the house. Use wall washes (aimed along the wall) instead of uplights (aimed up the wall).

Mistake: String lights pulled too tight. In a courtyard, the string light span is short (15 to 20 feet), and the temptation is to pull the string drum tight. A tight string puts lateral force on the wall anchors and looks like a power line. Allow a 6 to 8 inch sag, which looks intentional and reduces the anchor load.

Mistake: Visible panels everywhere. In a small courtyard, every solar panel is visible. A courtyard with 10 visible panels looks like a solar farm. Use remote panels, mounted on the roof or hidden behind parapets, and run cables to the fixtures. The fixtures should be visible, the panels should not.

Mistake: Cool white in an enclosed space. Cool white in a courtyard is worse than in an open yard, because the walls reflect the cool light back and forth, amplifying the clinical feel. Always use warm white (2700K) in a courtyard. The warm light bouncing off the walls creates a candlelit glow that suits the intimate space.

Mistake: Forgetting the view from inside. The courtyard is viewed from inside the house through windows. A light that is fine from the courtyard glares into the living room. Walk inside at night and look out at the courtyard from every window. Reposition or shield any light that glares into the house.

The Courtyard as a Room

The way to think about courtyard lighting is to treat the courtyard as an outdoor room. It has four walls, a floor, and (if there is a pergola or string lights) a ceiling. Light it the way you would light an indoor room: ambient light for the overall space, task light for the seating, accent light for the features, all at low intensity and warm color.

The difference from an indoor room is that the courtyard has no insulation from the sky, so the contrast between the lit courtyard and the dark sky is extreme. This is what makes courtyards magical at night, when they work. The warm glow in the middle of the dark enclosure feels like a lantern in the landscape.

To achieve that magic, restraint is the key. Fewer fixtures, lower output, warmer color, more angles. A courtyard with 8 well-placed fixtures feels like a designed space. A courtyard with 20 fixtures feels like a parking lot. The enclosure magnifies everything, so the rule is to underlight and add more only if needed.

Start with the string lights over the seating. Live with them for a week. Add the tabletop lanterns. Live with them for a week. Then add the wall washes, one wall at a time, and stop when the space feels defined. Add the planting uplights last, only if the planting needs the emphasis. The courtyard will tell you when it is done, by feeling complete. If you have to ask whether you need more light, you do not. Less, in a courtyard, is almost always more.
