Patio Furniture Materials Compared: What Lasts Outdoors

I have owned patio furniture in almost every material made, because I am cheap and I keep buying whatever is on sale, which means I have learned the hard way what survives and what does not. The material your patio furniture is made of determines everything about how it ages, how much work it demands, and how long before you are shopping for replacements. The shape and style matter less than the material, because a well-made chair in the wrong material is junk in three years, while a mediocre design in the right material lasts decades.

This is a comparison of the five dominant patio furniture materials, evaluated over a realistic five-year horizon, because that is about how long it takes to separate the survivors from the disposables.

How I Am Comparing Them

Five criteria, weighted toward the things that actually matter outdoors.

  • Weather resistance. How does it handle rain, sun, freeze-thaw, and humidity over years?
  • Durability and structural life. How long before it breaks, bends, or fails under use?
  • Maintenance burden. How much work does it demand per year to stay looking good?
  • Comfort. Does the material itself contribute to or detract from comfort, separate from cushions?
  • Weight and portability. Does it blow around in wind? Is it easy to move? Is it a theft risk?

Each material gets a rating and a real-world assessment, not a brochure claim. I have sat on, repaired, and thrown away all of these.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the unsung hero of patio furniture. It does not rust, it is light, it is cheap, and it lasts forever. If I had to recommend one material to someone who wanted to buy once and never think about it again, aluminum would be it.

Weather Resistance: Excellent

Aluminum forms a thin oxide layer when exposed to air that stops further corrosion. It does not rust the way steel does. Powder-coated aluminum (the standard finish) adds a tough colored layer that handles sun and rain for years. Even when the coating scratches, the aluminum underneath does not degrade the way bare steel does. It just oxidizes slightly and stops.

Durability: Good To Excellent

Cast aluminum (poured into molds) is heavy and rigid and lasts decades. Tubular aluminum (hollow tubes) is lighter and cheaper but can bend under load. Both outlast steel. The weak points are the joints (welds can crack) and the hardware (screws rust even if the frame does not).

Maintenance: Very Low

Wash it with soap and water a couple times a year. Touch up scratched powder coat with appliance touch-up paint to prevent the occasional corrosion spot. That is it. No sealing, no oiling, no covering. Aluminum is the lowest-maintenance material on this list.

Comfort: Fair

Aluminum frames are hard and conduct heat and cold. In direct sun, aluminum gets hot enough to burn skin. In cold weather, it is cold to touch. Cushions are essential for any aluminum seating you actually want to sit in for more than a few minutes. The material itself contributes nothing to comfort.

Weight: Light To Moderate

Tubular aluminum is light enough to blow around in strong wind, which is a real problem in exposed locations. Cast aluminum is heavier and stays put. Neither is heavy enough to deter a determined thief, which matters in some settings.

The Five-Year Verdict

Aluminum looks nearly the same at year five as at year one, with maybe some fading on the powder coat and a few scratches. It is the material I recommend to anyone who wants to stop thinking about their patio furniture.

Steel (Powder-Coated And Otherwise)

Steel is strong, cheap, and looks great new. It is also the material most likely to betray you, because steel rusts, and once rust starts it does not stop.

Weather Resistance: Poor To Fair

Bare steel rusts immediately outdoors. Powder-coated steel resists rust for a while, but the coating chips at joints, edges, and any place that gets knocked, and rust creeps under the coating from the chip. Once rust is under the coating, it spreads invisibly until the coating flakes off in sheets. This process accelerates in humid climates and near salt water.

Durability: Fair

The steel itself is strong and does not bend easily. But rust eats it from the inside. A steel chair that feels solid at year two can be structurally compromised at year five because the tubing has rusted thin from the inside. Tap a suspect frame with a screwdriver. If it sounds thin or flakes rust, the frame is dying.

Maintenance: High

To keep steel furniture alive, you must inspect for chips yearly, sand and repaint any exposed metal, and store it dry in winter. Even with care, steel in a wet climate has a finite life. The maintenance is constant and the rust wins eventually.

Comfort: Fair

Like aluminum, steel is hard and temperature-conductive. Cushions required. Steel frames can be made in more comfortable shapes than tubular aluminum because the steel is stronger, but the material itself is not comfortable.

Weight: Heavy

Steel is the heaviest common patio furniture material, which means it does not blow around and is harder to steal. This is a real advantage for exposed or public spaces. The downside is that it is hard to move for cleaning or storage.

The Five-Year Verdict

In a dry climate, powder-coated steel can look decent at five years with maintenance. In a humid or coastal climate, it is often rusted and failing by year five regardless of care. I no longer buy steel patio furniture for outdoor use. It is a false economy.

Wicker (Natural And Synthetic)

Wicker is a weaving technique, not a material, and the distinction matters enormously. Natural wicker (rattan, bamboo, willow) is for sheltered porches only. Synthetic wicker (resin, HDPE) is the outdoor version and is what most modern “wicker” patio furniture is made of.

Natural Wicker

Natural wicker has no place in exposed outdoor conditions. It absorbs water, rots, attracts mold, and disintegrates in sun. Do not buy natural wicker for a patio unless the patio is fully covered and you accept a short life. I am not going to rate it further because it is the wrong choice for the application.

Synthetic (Resin) Wicker

This is what people mean when they say “outdoor wicker.” It is woven from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or lower-grade PVC resin strands over a frame (usually aluminum, sometimes steel).

Weather Resistance: Good To Excellent (HDPE), Fair (PVC)

HDPE wicker handles sun, rain, and temperature extremes for years without fading, cracking, or becoming brittle. PVC wicker is cheaper and degrades faster, becoming brittle and cracking after a couple seasons in sun. The difference is night and day. HDPE wicker at year five looks new. PVC wicker at year five is shedding flakes.

Durability: Good

The frame matters more than the weave. An aluminum-framed HDPE wicker piece lasts many years. A steel-framed piece fails when the frame rusts, even if the weave is fine. Check the frame material before buying. The weave itself is tough and resists sagging.

Maintenance: Low

Hose it off and wipe it down occasionally. The weave traps dust and debris in its crevices, so a brush helps. No sealing or oiling. The main maintenance issue is the weave loosening over time, which you can sometimes tighten by re-weaving or tacking loose ends.

Comfort: Good

Wicker has a slight flex that makes it more comfortable than rigid metal, and the weave breathes, which is nice in hot weather. Cushions still help for longer sitting, but bare wicker is more tolerable than bare metal.

Weight: Moderate

Wicker furniture is heavy enough to resist wind but light enough to move. A good middle ground.

The Five-Year Verdict

HDPE wicker on an aluminum frame looks great at five years with minimal care. PVC wicker on a steel frame is likely failing. The material quality matters more for wicker than for any other category, so buy HDPE and check the frame.

Teak (And Other Hardwoods)

Teak is the gold standard for wood patio furniture, and it earns the reputation. It is expensive, and it is worth it if you want wood that genuinely lasts outdoors.

Weather Resistance: Excellent

Teak is naturally high in oils and silica that make it resistant to water, rot, and insects. It does not need sealing or finishing to survive outdoors. Left alone, it weathers from golden brown to a silvery gray over a year and then stays that color indefinitely. The wood does not rot, warp, or crack the way other woods do.

Durability: Excellent

Teak is a dense, hard, strong wood. A teak chair lasts decades. The joints are the weak point, and good teak furniture uses mortise-and-tenon joinery that holds up. Cheap teak (there is such a thing, often from younger plantation trees) is less dense and less durable, but still better than almost any other wood.

Maintenance: Low To Medium

If you like the silver-gray look, maintenance is nearly zero. Let it weather and occasionally wash it. If you want to keep the original golden color, you must oil or seal it every few months, which is a significant ongoing task. Most teak owners eventually let it go silver because the maintenance to keep it golden is relentless.

Comfort: Good

Teak is hard, like all wood, but the warmth and slight give of wood is more pleasant than metal. Cushions help for long sitting. Teak does not get as hot as metal in the sun.

Weight: Heavy

Teak is dense and heavy. It stays put in wind and is not easy to move. This is good for permanence, bad for rearranging.

Other Hardwoods

Shorea, eucalyptus, and acacia are sold as cheaper alternatives to teak. They are less oily and less dense, and they require sealing to survive outdoors. With sealing, they last 5 to 10 years. Without it, they crack and rot in 2 to 3. They are a reasonable budget choice if you commit to the maintenance, but they are not teak.

The Five-Year Verdict

Teak at five years, weathered silver, looks better than it did new and has many years left. The cost is high upfront but the annual cost over its life is lower than replacing cheaper furniture repeatedly.

Poly Lumber (HDPE Recycled Plastic)

Poly lumber is the new contender, made from recycled HDPE plastic formed into boards that look like wood. It is marketed as the zero-maintenance alternative to wood, and the marketing is largely accurate.

Weather Resistance: Excellent

Poly lumber does not absorb water, does not rot, does not crack, and does not splinter. It handles sun, rain, and freeze-thaw without degradation. The color is throughout the material, so scratches do not show a different color underneath. UV stabilizers prevent fading, though dark colors still fade somewhat over many years.

Durability: Good To Excellent

The material itself is nearly indestructible. The weak points are the fasteners (stainless steel screws, which should last) and the joints. Poly lumber is heavy and rigid and does not weaken with age. The main failure mode is hardware loosening over years of thermal cycling, which is fixable by tightening.

Maintenance: Very Low

Wash it with soap and water. That is it. No sealing, no painting, no oiling. The color does not need refreshing. This is the lowest-maintenance material on the list, tied with aluminum.

Comfort: Fair

Poly lumber is hard and can be slightly flexible depending on the design. It does not get as hot as metal in the sun, but dark colors in direct sun get too hot to sit on. Cushions help. The material does not have the warmth of wood, but it does not have the coldness of metal either.

Weight: Heavy

Poly lumber is dense and heavy. Chairs stay put in wind and are hard to move. Some people find it too heavy for casual rearranging.

The Five-Year Verdict

Poly lumber at five years looks essentially new. It is the best choice for someone who wants wood-look furniture with zero maintenance, and its lifespan is effectively indefinite.

Choosing Based On Your Situation

The best material depends on your climate, your maintenance tolerance, and your budget. Here is how I advise people.

Want to buy once and forget? Aluminum or poly lumber. Both are low-maintenance and long-lived. Aluminum for lighter, cheaper pieces. Poly lumber for the wood look.

Want wood and will maintain it? Teak. Do not bother with cheaper hardwoods unless budget forces it, because the maintenance to keep them alive approaches the cost of teak over time.

Want the wicker look? Buy HDPE wicker on an aluminum frame. Insist on HDPE (not PVC) and aluminum (not steel). This combination is durable and the only wicker worth owning outdoors.

On a tight budget? Used cast aluminum. It is plentiful on classifieds, lasts forever, and refinishes easily. Avoid cheap new steel sets, which are false economy.

In a humid or coastal climate? Avoid steel entirely. Aluminum, teak, HDPE wicker, and poly lumber all handle humidity and salt. Steel does not, period.

In a high-wind area? Heavy materials (teak, poly lumber, cast aluminum, steel) stay put. Light tubular aluminum and lightweight wicker blow around.

In extreme sun? All materials fade eventually, but HDPE wicker and poly lumber hold color best. Dark colors on any material fade faster than light colors. Cushions fade fastest of all, so store them or accept replacement.

The Cushion Problem

Whatever frame material you choose, the cushions are the weak link. Cushions fade, mildew, absorb water, and flatten faster than any frame fails. Budget for cushion replacement every 3 to 5 years, and buy cushions with Sunbrella or equivalent solution-dyed acrylic fabric, which resists fading and mildew far better than cheap polyester. Quick-drying foam costs more but prevents the soggy-cushion problem after rain.

The frame is the long-term investment. The cushions are the consumable. Buy a good frame once and replace cushions as needed.

Hardware And Fasteners

A note that applies to all materials. The screws, bolts, and hinges on patio furniture rust even when the frame does not. Insist on stainless steel hardware. If a piece comes with plated steel hardware, swap it for stainless immediately. A stainless bolt costs cents and prevents the most common hardware failure. Rusty hardware seizes, strips, and makes disassembly for cleaning or storage impossible.

Check and tighten hardware each spring. Thermal cycling loosens bolts over a season, and a loose chair is a wobbly chair is a broken chair.

Seasonal Storage And Protection

How you treat furniture through the year matters as much as the material. Even durable materials last longer with seasonal care, and even rugged materials can fail prematurely if neglected through a hard winter.

What To Store Indoors

Cushions always come inside for winter, regardless of material. Foam absorbs moisture, fabric mildews, and freezing temperatures degrade the foam cells. Store cushions in a dry shed, garage, or indoor closet. This single practice extends cushion life from 1 to 2 years to 4 to 5 years.

Fabric items (outdoor curtains, umbrellas, shade sails) come inside too. Wind and snow destroy them. An umbrella left open in a winter storm becomes wreckage.

Anything with moving parts (folding chairs, reclining loungers, gas lift mechanisms) benefits from dry storage. The mechanisms corrode and seize if left damp and frozen.

What Can Stay Out

Aluminum, teak, poly lumber, and HDPE wicker on aluminum frames can stay outside year-round in most climates. They are designed for it. Give them a fall cleaning before winter so dirt and organic matter do not sit wet against them for months, and they will be fine in spring.

Steel and PVC wicker should come inside in harsh climates, because freeze-thaw and road salt accelerate their failure. If they must stay out, cover them with breathable furniture covers (not plastic tarps, which trap moisture and cause the very rot you are trying to prevent).

Covers: Worth It Or Not?

Furniture covers are a mixed bag. A good breathable cover protects against UV, bird droppings, and sap, and extends the life of the furniture. A bad cover (plastic, non-breathable) traps moisture and accelerates mildew and rust. If you cover furniture, use proper breathable outdoor furniture covers, not blue tarps, and remove the covers periodically to let the furniture air out.

Covers are most valuable for pieces you cannot easily move (a heavy dining set, a built-in sectional) and least valuable for pieces you can just bring inside. Do not bother covering aluminum or poly lumber, they do not need it. Cover steel and natural wicker if they must stay out.

Warranties And What They Actually Cover

Patio furniture warranties look generous on paper and are narrower in practice. Understand what you are actually buying.

Frame warranties (often 5 to 15 years, sometimes lifetime) cover structural failure of the frame under normal use. They do not cover rust (which manufacturers classify as normal aging), finish failure (classified as cosmetic), or damage from weather (classified as an environmental factor, not a defect). So a “10-year warranty” on a steel frame does not help you when the frame rusts through at year 6, because rust is excluded.

Cushion and fabric warranties (often 1 to 3 years) cover seam failure and fabric separation, not fading (excluded as normal UV aging) or mildew (excluded as a maintenance issue). So the cushion that fades to a different color in one summer is not covered.

The practical takeaway is that warranties protect you against manufacturing defects in the first year or two, when defects show up. They rarely protect you against the slow environmental failure that actually kills outdoor furniture. So buy based on material durability, not warranty length. A material that lasts 10 years without a warranty beats a material with a 10-year warranty that excludes everything that actually goes wrong.

Keep your receipts and register warranties where required. The few legitimate claims people have are usually denied without proof of purchase and registration.

My Current Stance

After years of buying and discarding, I have narrowed my own patio to three materials. Cast aluminum for the dining set (indestructible, cheap used, low maintenance). Teak for a bench and accent pieces (the wood look I wanted, aging beautifully into silver). HDPE wicker on aluminum for the seating group (comfortable, durable, looks good). I no longer buy steel, PVC wicker, or cheap hardwoods, because the math does not work over five years.

The material is the decision. Get the material right and the specific design matters less. Get it wrong and no amount of style or price savings rescues furniture that is rusting, rotting, or shedding in your yard. Buy for the five-year horizon, not the showroom floor, and your patio will be furnished with things you still like, still use, and still do not have to replace.
