I built my first outdoor bar from a repurposed potting bench and a folding table. It was wobbly, the drinks were warm, and every time I made a margarita the blender cord stretched across the patio where people tripped over it. The bar got used twice before I gave up on it. Three years later, I built a proper outdoor bar from the ground up, and the difference was night and day. Parties became easier, cleanup was faster, and people actually gathered at the bar instead of avoiding it.
An outdoor bar is one of the most useful additions to a backyard entertaining space, but only if it is designed around how bars actually function. This means thinking about counter height, storage, refrigeration, electrical access, and weather resistance before you build. Here is what I learned the hard way.
Deciding What Kind of Bar You Need
Not every backyard needs a full wet bar with running water and a kegerator. The first step is being honest about how you entertain.
The Three Bar Types
A dry bar is a counter with storage underneath and no plumbing. It holds bottles, glassware, and bar tools. You mix drinks with bottled water and ice from a cooler. This is the simplest and cheapest option, and it handles 80 percent of what most people need. A well designed dry bar costs 500 to 2,000 dollars and can be built in a weekend.
A wet bar adds a sink with running water. This means plumbing, drainage, and a water supply line. A wet bar is significantly more useful for large gatherings because you can rinse glasses, wash your hands, and clean up without going inside. Expect to spend 2,000 to 6,000 dollars, depending on whether you do the plumbing yourself.
A full outdoor kitchen bar includes a grill, refrigerator, ice maker, and possibly a kegerator or wine fridge. This is a permanent structure that essentially moves your kitchen outside. Costs start at 5,000 dollars and can easily exceed 25,000 dollars for premium materials and appliances.
This article focuses on the dry bar and wet bar range, which is what most backyard entertainers actually need. If you are considering a full outdoor kitchen, the bar design principles here still apply, but you also need to think about ventilation, gas lines, and appliance clearances, which are beyond the scope of this guide.
Counter Height and Dimensions
The counter is the heart of the bar. Get the dimensions wrong and the bar will feel awkward to use, no matter how good it looks.
Standard Bar Height vs Counter Height
There are two standard heights for bars, and they serve different purposes.
Counter height (34 to 36 inches) is the same height as a kitchen counter. It is comfortable for preparing drinks while standing, and it pairs with standard counter height bar stools (24 to 26 inch seat height). Counter height is better if your bar is also used as a food prep area or a serving buffet.
Bar height (40 to 42 inches) is the traditional bar height. It is taller, which creates a more distinct bar feeling, and it pairs with bar height stools (28 to 30 inch seat height). Bar height is better for a dedicated drinking bar where people gather to socialize. The taller height also allows more storage space underneath.
For most backyard bars, I recommend bar height (42 inches). It creates a psychological separation between the bar area and the dining area, and people naturally gather at a taller counter. The one exception is if your bar is part of an outdoor kitchen with a grill, in which case counter height (36 inches) matches the grill height and creates a continuous work surface.
Counter Depth and Overhang
Counter depth should be 18 to 24 inches. Deeper than 24 inches and you cannot reach the back of the counter comfortably. Shallower than 18 inches and there is not enough room to mix drinks. The sweet spot is 20 to 22 inches.
The overhang is the portion of the counter that extends beyond the base cabinet, creating a knee space for bar stools. The overhang should be 10 to 12 inches for comfortable seating. Less than 8 inches and people’s knees hit the cabinet. More than 15 inches and the counter needs additional support (corbels or brackets) to prevent sagging or cracking.
Bar Length
How long should the bar be? It depends on how many people you want to seat.
- 2 people seated: 4 feet minimum (24 inches per person plus elbow room)
- 3 people seated: 6 feet
- 4 people seated: 8 feet
- 5 to 6 people seated: 10 to 12 feet
Add 18 to 24 inches at one end for a service area where the bartender stands to mix drinks. This service area should not have a stool in front of it.
Weatherproof Surfaces and Materials
An outdoor bar is exposed to sun, rain, temperature swings, and spilled drinks. The materials you choose for the counter and the base determine how long the bar lasts and how much maintenance it needs.
Counter Surface Materials
Granite is the best overall counter surface for an outdoor bar. It is heat resistant, scratch resistant, and naturally water resistant when sealed. It does not stain easily, and it handles outdoor temperature swings without cracking. Sealing is needed once a year. Granite costs 40 to 100 dollars per square foot installed. Choose a darker color with a consistent pattern, because outdoor dust and spills show more on light colored or patterned stone.
Concrete is a popular outdoor bar surface because it can be cast in any shape and tinted any color. It costs 40 to 80 dollars per square foot. Concrete is durable but must be sealed regularly (every 6 to 12 months) to prevent staining and water absorption. Unsealed concrete absorbs wine, citrus, and oil, leaving permanent marks. Concrete can also develop hairline cracks over time, which some people find characterful and others find annoying.
Stainless steel is the professional choice for outdoor bar surfaces. It is completely waterproof, heatproof, and hygienic. It does not stain or absorb anything. The downside is that it scratches easily (the scratches blend into a patina over time) and it gets extremely hot in direct sun. Stainless steel costs 50 to 120 dollars per square foot. Use it if your bar is under a cover, not in direct sun.
Tile is the most DIY friendly counter surface. Porcelain or ceramic tile costs 2 to 15 dollars per square foot and can be installed over a cement board substrate. The tiles themselves are waterproof, but the grout is not. Grout absorbs stains and grows mold in outdoor conditions. Use epoxy grout (not cementitious grout) for outdoor tile counters, and re seal annually.
Wood (teak or cedar) creates a warm, natural bar surface that is unique among bar materials. Teak is naturally water and rot resistant and can be used outdoors with minimal maintenance. The wood must be oiled regularly to maintain its color, otherwise it turns gray. Wood counters can harbor bacteria in the grain and are not ideal for food prep, but they are fine for a drinks only bar.
Base Cabinet Materials
Stainless steel cabinets are the gold standard for outdoor bar bases. They are rustproof, rodent proof, and weatherproof. They cost 300 to 800 dollars per cabinet, which is expensive but they last forever. If you are building a permanent bar, stainless cabinets are worth the investment.
Polymer cabinets are made from high density plastic. They are waterproof, will not rust or rot, and cost less than stainless (200 to 500 dollars per cabinet). They look slightly less premium than stainless but perform similarly. Several manufacturers make modular outdoor cabinet systems in polymer.
Wood frame with weatherproof cladding is the DIY option. Build a frame from pressure treated lumber, clad the exterior with cement board or marine plywood, and finish with stucco, stone veneer, or tile. The interior should be lined with a moisture barrier. This approach costs less than modular cabinets (100 to 300 dollars for materials) but requires significant carpentry skill and will not last as long as stainless or polymer.
Do not use standard indoor kitchen cabinets outdoors. The particleboard and MDF used in indoor cabinets will swell and disintegrate within one season of outdoor exposure. Even “moisture resistant” indoor cabinets are not rated for outdoor conditions.
Storage: What Goes Where
A bar is not just a counter. It is a storage system for everything you need to make and serve drinks. Plan the storage around what you actually use.
Bottle Storage
Bottles need to be stored horizontally or in a rack that prevents them from rolling. Options include:
- Shelves with rails: Simple shelves with a 1 inch lip or rail on the front edge keep bottles from sliding off. Install shelves at 12 to 14 inch spacing to accommodate tall bottles.
- Wine rack: If you serve wine, include a horizontal wine rack that holds 6 to 12 bottles. Store wine horizontally to keep the cork moist.
- Speed rail: A stainless steel speed rail mounted to the front of the bar holds the most used bottles (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whiskey) within easy reach. This is what professional bartenders use, and it makes a huge difference in drink making efficiency.
Glassware Storage
Glasses should be stored upside down to keep dust and insects out. Options include:
- Shelves with hanging racks: Wine glass racks that hold glasses by the stem are efficient and look professional.
- Cabinet with shelves: Closed cabinet storage keeps glasses cleaner than open shelves. Include a door that seals reasonably well against dust and insects.
- Drawer storage: A deep drawer with dividers keeps glasses organized and protected. This is the best option for fine glassware that you do not want chipped.
Store at least 8 to 12 of each glass type (rocks, highball, wine) for a bar that serves 6 to 8 people. If you entertain larger groups, store more. Running out of clean glasses mid party is a common problem.
Bar Tool Storage
Designate a drawer or a container for bar tools: shaker, strainer, jigger, bar spoon, muddler, bottle opener, wine key, and cutting board for garnishes. A dedicated drawer keeps these organized and prevents them from getting lost in the cabinet with the bottles.
Ice Storage
Ice is the most logistically challenging element of an outdoor bar. You need a lot of it, and it melts.
- A cooler dedicated to ice is the simplest solution. Keep a 40 to 60 quart cooler under the bar or beside it, filled with ice. Drain the melt water periodically.
- An ice maker is the premium solution. A standalone outdoor rated ice maker produces 20 to 30 pounds of ice per day and stores it in an insulated bin. It costs 800 to 2,000 dollars and requires a water line and drain.
- Your freezer inside the house is the backup. Freeze several large bags of ice the day before a party and transfer them to the bar cooler as needed.
Plan for about 1 pound of ice per person per hour of party time. A 4 hour party for 10 people needs 40 pounds of ice.
Electrical: Powering the Bar
If your bar has any electric appliances (blender, mini fridge, ice maker, lighting, speakers), you need properly installed outdoor electrical. This is not optional and not something to improvise.
Outlet Placement
Install at least two GFCI protected outlets at the bar. One should be at counter height (for plugging in a blender or other appliance you use on the counter) and one should be inside the cabinet (for a mini fridge or ice maker). Use in use weatherproof covers that close around plugged in cords.
If your bar has a seating area with stools, add an outlet on the patron side of the bar for phone charging. A USB outlet is a nice touch that guests appreciate.
Dedicated Circuits
A blender draws 10 to 15 amps when running. A mini fridge draws 2 to 4 amps continuously but spikes to 10+ amps when the compressor starts. If both run on the same circuit and the circuit also powers lighting and speakers, you will trip the breaker the first time you make a frozen drink.
Run a dedicated 20 amp circuit for the bar appliances. This costs 200 to 500 dollars if you hire an electrician, and it prevents the embarrassing moment when the party goes dark because the blender and the fridge started at the same time.
Mini Fridge Considerations
A mini fridge at the outdoor bar is incredibly convenient but has specific requirements:
- It must be rated for outdoor use. Indoor mini fridges are not insulated or sealed for outdoor temperature swings. An indoor fridge in a 100 degree outdoor environment runs constantly, struggles to cool, and dies young.
- Outdoor rated mini fridges cost 300 to 700 dollars, about double the indoor equivalent.
- The fridge needs ventilation. Do not enclose it in a cabinet without airflow, or the compressor will overheat. Leave at least 2 inches of clearance on all sides and provide vented panels in the cabinet.
- The fridge should be installed in a shaded location. Direct sun on a fridge makes it work harder and shortens its life. Under the bar counter, away from direct sun, is ideal.
The Sink Question (For Wet Bars)
If you decide to add a sink, you need to understand the plumbing requirements before you build.
Water Supply
You need a potable water supply line run to the bar. This means tapping into your home’s water supply, running a pipe (copper, PEX, or PVC) to the bar location, and installing a shutoff valve. In cold climates, the supply line must be buried below the frost line and must be drained or blown out before winter to prevent freezing.
Drainage
The sink needs a drain, and the drain needs somewhere to go. Options include:
- Tie into the home’s sewer line: This is the proper solution but requires trenching and connecting to the existing drain system. Expensive but permanent.
- Dry well: A gravel filled pit underground that receives and slowly drains the waste water. Works for a bar sink (which only produces gray water from rinsing, not sewage) but may not be allowed by local code.
- Gray water for irrigation: In some areas, you can route bar sink water to irrigate nearby plants. Check local regulations.
A bar sink does not need a garbage disposal. In fact, do not install one outdoors. They clog, they attract pests, and they are unnecessary for a bar that only rinses glasses.
Sink Type
A small bar sink (15 to 18 inches wide) is sufficient. Choose a stainless steel or composite sink that is deep enough to rinse a cocktail shaker (at least 8 inches deep). Install a single handle faucet with a pull down sprayer for easy cleaning. The faucet must be rated for outdoor use, or it will corrode.
Lighting the Bar
The bar needs two types of lighting: task lighting for the bartender and ambient lighting for the surrounding area.
Task Lighting
The bartender needs bright, focused light on the work surface to measure drinks, cut garnishes, and find bottles. This is 200 to 300 lux at the counter surface.
Mount an under counter LED light strip on the underside of the bar overhang, aimed at the work surface. Use a warm white (2700K to 3000K) LED strip rated for outdoor use. Wire it to a switch so the bartender can control it independently.
If your bar has a roof or overhead structure, a pendant light above the bar also provides task lighting. Position it 30 to 36 inches above the counter surface.
Ambient Lighting
The area around the bar should have softer, lower level lighting that creates a gathering atmosphere without competing with the task lighting. String lights above the bar, path lights leading to the bar, and low level landscape lighting all contribute.
The bar should be the brightest spot in the immediate area, drawing people to it naturally. If the surrounding area is brighter than the bar, people will not congregate there.
Bottle Display Lighting
If you have a back shelf with bottles, lighting it from behind or below creates an attractive display that makes the bar feel professional. LED strips behind the bottle shelf, aimed at the bottles, create a backlit effect. Use a warm or amber color to make the bottles glow without harsh brightness.
Seating at the Bar
Bar stools are the final element, and their height must match the counter.

The difference between the counter and the stool seat should be 10 to 12 inches. This leaves enough legroom for comfort without the counter being too high to reach.
Stool Type
Backless stools are compact and easy to move, but uncomfortable for long sitting. Fine for a quick drink, bad for lingering.
Stools with low backs provide some support without taking up much visual space. A good compromise.
Stools with full backs and arms are the most comfortable but take up the most space. They are hard to tuck under the bar when not in use. Choose these if your bar is a primary seating area.
Swivel stools are easier to get in and out of than stationary stools, because you can rotate to face the bar or the yard without moving the stool. This is especially useful in a tight bar area.
Weatherproof Stools
Outdoor bar stools need to handle the same weather as the bar itself. Aluminum frames with UV resistant cushions are the most durable. Powder coated steel is acceptable but will eventually rust if the coating is scratched. Wood stools (teak, cedar) are beautiful but need maintenance. Avoid wicker stools, which degrade in sun and rain.
Store stool cushions inside when not in use. Even outdoor rated cushions last three times longer if protected from constant exposure.
The Service Side: Where the Bartender Works
If you are the bartender at your own parties, the bar needs to work for you as well as for your guests. The service side is the area where you stand to mix drinks, and it needs different design considerations than the patron side.
Service Counter Space
You need at least 24×18 inches of clear counter space on the service side for a cutting board, a mixing area, and a place to set finished drinks. This space should not have bottles or decorations on it. It is a work surface.
Tool Accessibility
Everything you use frequently should be within arm’s reach of the service position. The speed rail with common spirits should be directly in front of you. The bar tool drawer should be under the service counter. The ice source should be one step away. If you have to walk around the bar to get ice or tools, the design is wrong.
Trash and Recycling
A trash container for empty bottles, napkins, and fruit garnishes should be under the service counter, easily accessible. A recycling container for glass and cans should be next to it. Nothing kills the flow of a bar faster than running out of places to put empties.
Location and Orientation
Where you put the bar in your yard affects how it functions.
Proximity to the Kitchen
The bar should be as close to the indoor kitchen as practical, because you will make trips inside for supplies, ice refills, and cleanup. A bar that requires walking across the entire yard to reach the kitchen will be underused.
Orientation to Seating Areas
The bar should face the primary seating area. The bartender should be able to see and talk to guests while making drinks. If the bar faces a wall or a fence, the bartender is isolated and the social function of the bar is lost.
Shade and Cover
A bar in full sun is uncomfortable for the bartender and causes bottles to heat up (which changes the taste of spirits and speeds up ice melt). Put the bar under a shade structure or plan to add one. A pergola or shade sail over the bar is both functional and attractive.
Wind Considerations
The bar service area is sensitive to wind because you are working with loose items: napkins, stirrers, fruit garnishes, paper cups. Position the bar so the prevailing wind hits the back of the bar, not the front. A solid back panel on the bar blocks wind and creates a cleaner service area.
My Bar Build: What I Did Right and Wrong
My current outdoor bar is an 8 foot long, 42 inch high wet bar with a granite counter, stainless steel base cabinets, a speed rail, a mini fridge, and a small sink. It is covered by a pergola with string lights overhead. It cost about 4,500 dollars in materials and took three weekends to build.
What I did right: The bar height, the speed rail, the dedicated electrical circuit, and the granite counter. These four decisions made the bar genuinely functional.
What I did wrong: I did not include enough closed storage. Most of my glassware sits on open shelves, which collect dust and require washing before every use. I also skimped on the bar overhang, making it 8 inches instead of 12, which means tall guests’ knees hit the cabinet. If I rebuilt it, I would add a 12 inch overhang and a closed cabinet for glassware.
The bar gets used for every gathering I host, from small dinners to large parties. It changed the way I entertain because it gave drinks a home. Instead of people congregating in my kitchen or clustering around a cooler on the patio, they gather at the bar, which is exactly what a bar is supposed to do.
