Mulch is the most cost-effective thing you can do for your landscape. A two to three inch layer of organic material suppresses weeds, holds moisture, regulates soil temperature, and breaks down into organic matter that feeds the soil. Done right, it saves water and labor. Done wrong, it kills trees, breeds fungus, and costs more than it should.
I have used every kind of mulch there is, from the free municipal wood chips to bagged rubber nuggets, and I have formed opinions. This is what I have learned about the options, the right depth, and the mistakes that cause the most damage.
Why Mulch Matters
Before getting into types, the functional case. A bare soil surface is a hostile place for plants. Rain compacts it, sun bakes it, wind erodes it, and weed seeds germinate in it. Mulch moderates all of this.
A properly mulched bed loses significantly less water to evaporation than bare soil, often 50 to 70 percent less. Soil temperatures stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter, which protects roots. Weeds that do germinate are easy to pull because the mulch stays loose. Organic mulches break down over time and add organic matter to the top layer of soil, improving structure and feeding soil organisms.
Inorganic mulches, stone and rubber, do not feed the soil but do provide the weed suppression and moisture benefits. They are a different tool for a different job.
Organic Mulches Compared
Hardwood Bark and Shredded Hardwood
The most common mulch in the United States, sold bagged and in bulk. Made from the bark and outer wood of hardwood trees, usually oak, maple, or a mix.
Pros: Readily available, affordable, breaks down at a moderate rate, stays in place on slopes better than nuggets, dark brown color that reads as “fresh mulch.”
Cons: The fine shredded form can mat together and shed water. Decomposing hardwood can temporarily tie up nitrogen at the soil surface. The dyed versions, black, red, brown, are aesthetically questionable and the dye can rub off on shoes and pets when fresh.
I use natural, undyed shredded hardwood for most of my beds. It is the workhorse. Apply at two to three inches and refresh annually, though you usually only need to add an inch or so on top of what is already there.
Pine Bark Nuggets
Chunks of pine bark, sold in various sizes from mini to large.
Pros: Attractive dark color, does not compact as much as shredded hardwood, breaks down slowly so it lasts longer, slightly acidic which benefits acid-loving plants.
Cons: Floats in heavy rain and can wash out of beds on slopes. Large nuggets look chunky and can be hard to walk on. Takes longer to break down, which is a pro for longevity but a con if you want the soil-building benefit.
Pine bark is my choice for acid-loving beds, azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, and for flat beds where washout is not a concern.
Pine Straw
Dried pine needles, sold in bales, common in the South and Southeast where longleaf and loblolly pines are native.
Pros: Lightweight, easy to spread, lets water through readily, stays put on slopes better than almost anything else, naturally acidic, looks natural under acid-loving plants and in woodland settings.
Cons: Not widely available outside pine-growing regions. Breaks down faster than bark. Can be a fire risk in dry climates. Some people find the color, a reddish-brown, less attractive than dark bark.
If you live where pine straw is sold, it is excellent. If you do not, importing it is expensive.
Wood Chips
Chipped branches and tree trimmings, often available free from arborists and municipal green waste programs.
Pros: Cheap or free, contains both bark and wood, breaks down to build excellent soil, the “arborist chips” with leaves and twigs included are some of the best soil-building mulch there is.
Cons: Variable in appearance and size, can include large chunks, may contain wood from diseased trees, breaks down faster than bark so needs more frequent refreshing. Fresh chips can temporarily tie up nitrogen at the surface, though this rarely affects established plants.
I get arborist wood chips by the truckload for free and use them everywhere I do not need a uniform appearance. Behind the garden, in the woodland edge, on paths. The soil under wood-chipped beds improves dramatically over a few years.
Compost and Aged Manure
Technically soil amendments more than mulches, but sometimes used as a topdressing.
Pros: Adds nutrients and organic matter directly. Dark color reads as mulch.
Cons: Weed seeds in uncomposted manure. Does not suppress weeds as well as coarse mulch because it is fine-textured. Can be too rich for some plants if applied thickly.
Use compost as a thin topdressing under a coarser mulch, not as the mulch itself, unless weed suppression is not the goal.
Cocoa Bean Shells
A byproduct of chocolate production, sold as mulch in some regions.
Pros: Dark, fine texture, smells like chocolate when first spread, attractive.
Cons: Expensive. Can be toxic to dogs who are attracted by the smell and eat it. Molds readily in wet weather. Light enough to blow around. I do not recommend it if you have dogs, and even without dogs, the downsides outweigh the benefits.
Inorganic Mulches
River Rock and Gravel
Pros: Permanent, does not break down, reflects heat which can benefit heat-loving plants in cool climates, looks clean and architectural, does not harbor fungus.
Cons: Does not feed soil. Hard to keep clean, leaves and debris accumulate between stones and decay into soil that weeds germinate in. Extremely difficult to change your mind about, removing gravel is a miserable job. Reflects heat that can scorch tender plants in hot climates. Cold in winter, with no insulating benefit.
Use gravel for the right purpose: arid landscapes, Mediterranean plantings, modern architectural designs, paths. Do not use it as a generic substitute for bark around foundation plantings, because you will regret it when you want to change the bed.
Decomposed Granite and Pea Gravel
A finer version of stone mulch, used for paths and xeriscapes. Packs down to a firm surface. Same pros and cons as river rock, with the added benefit of being walkable.
Rubber Mulch
Made from recycled tires, sold in shredded or nugget form.
Pros: Does not break down, does not float, weed suppression is decent.
Cons: Smells like rubber in hot sun. The long-term soil effects are not well studied, and the material can contain zinc and other compounds that leach. If you ever want to remove it, you will be picking rubber out of your soil forever. It does not feed soil organisms, which is the main long-term benefit of mulch. I do not use it and do not recommend it. Spend the money on real bark.
The Right Depth
This is where most people go wrong, in both directions.
Too Thin
Less than two inches of mulch does not suppress weeds effectively. Annual weed seeds germinate right through it, and the moisture conservation benefit is minimal. A thin mulch layer is a waste of money and effort because it does not do the job.
Too Thick
More than four inches of mulch, especially fine-textured mulch, blocks water and oxygen from reaching the roots. Roots need to breathe, and a thick mat of wet mulch suffocates them. You will see shallow-rooted plants decline for no obvious reason, and the cause is often a too-thick mulch layer.
The sweet spot is two to four inches. Two inches for fine mulches like pine straw or compost. Three inches for bark and wood chips. Four inches maximum for coarse nuggets.
Refreshing Without Overbuilding
The common mistake here is adding three inches of fresh mulch every spring, on top of the old mulch that has not fully broken down. Over a few years, you end up with a six or eight inch layer that suffocates the plants.
The fix: before adding new mulch, check the depth of what is already there. If there is already two inches of decomposing mulch, you only need an inch of fresh material to get back to three inches. If the old mulch has built up, fluff it with a rake first. Some of it will decompose and not need replacing at all.
A few times I have had to remove old mulch entirely from beds that had been over-mulched for years. It is not pleasant. Measure before you add.
Mulch Volcanoes: The Worst Mistake
You have seen this. A tree with a cone of mulch piled a foot high against the trunk, looking like a volcano. It is everywhere, done by homeowners and by professional landscapers who should know better.
Mulch against the trunk keeps the bark constantly moist. Bark is supposed to be dry. Constant moisture causes the bark to rot, which girdles the tree, which kills it, slowly, over several years. Mulch volcanoes also encourage adventitious roots to grow from the trunk into the mulch, which circle and eventually strangle the trunk.
The correct mulch application around a tree is a flat disc, two to three inches deep, extending out to the drip line if possible, with the trunk kept clear. Pull mulch back three to six inches from the trunk so the root flare is visible and the bark stays dry.
If you see a tree with mulch piled against the trunk, pull it back. It takes two minutes and it may save the tree.
Which Mulches Acidify Soil
A common belief is that pine bark and pine straw make soil acidic. This is mostly a myth. The needles and bark of conifers are slightly acidic when fresh, but by the time they break down in the soil, the effect is negligible. Studies have repeatedly shown that pine bark mulch does not significantly lower soil pH.
What is true is that pine mulches are well suited to acid-loving plants because they do not make the soil more alkaline, the way some hardwood mulches can as they decompose. If you have azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, or other acid lovers, pine bark or pine straw is a good choice. But it will not turn alkaline soil acidic. Use sulfur for that.
Mulches and Pests
Termites
A concern I hear often. Does wood mulch attract termites?
The honest answer is that termites will forage in mulch if it is in contact with the foundation, because mulch holds moisture and termites need moisture. But mulch itself is not a termite magnet in the way people fear. Termites prefer solid wood over decomposing mulch.
The precaution that matters: keep mulch a few inches away from the foundation, particularly if you live in a termite-prone region. Do not pile it against the siding. If you are concerned, use stone mulch in the first foot or two around the foundation.
Slugs and Snails
Organic mulch provides habitat for slugs and snails, which hide under it during the day and come out to feed at night. If you have a slug problem, mulch makes it worse. The solutions are to use a coarser mulch that dries out faster on top, to keep the mulch thinner, or to use slug control measures like iron phosphate bait.
Fungi and Artillery Fungus
Organic mulch breaks down through fungal action, and sometimes you see the fruiting bodies: mushrooms, slime molds, bird’s nest fungus. Most are harmless and temporary.
The one to worry about is artillery fungus, Sphaerobolus, which grows in wood mulch and shoots tiny black spore packets that stick to surfaces. These spots are nearly impossible to remove from siding and cars. Artillery fungus is most common in mulch that is frequently wet and in shady areas. The fix is to use bark mulch rather than wood chips, to refresh mulch regularly, and to keep mulch from staying constantly saturated.
Dyed Mulch: What You Should Know
Dyed mulch, usually black, red, or brown, is ubiquitous at garden centers. The dye makes the mulch look fresh and uniform, which is the appeal. But there are a few things to know before you buy it.
The dye itself is generally not harmful. Most modern mulch dyes are iron oxide-based (red) or carbon-based (black), which are relatively benign. The concern is not the dye but the wood underneath it. Dyed mulch is often made from recycled wood, including pallets, construction debris, and pressure-treated lumber. This wood can contain chemicals, glues, and preservatives that you may not want in your landscape soil.
There is no reliable way to know what is in dyed mulch. The label does not list the source material. If you are mulching a vegetable garden or beds where children play, avoid dyed mulch entirely. For ornamental beds where soil contact is the main concern, the risk is lower but still real.
The other problem with dyed mulch is that the color fades. Within a season, the vivid black or red becomes a dull gray-brown, and you are left with the choice of topdressing with more dyed mulch (building up the layer) or living with the faded look. Natural bark mulch also fades, but it fades to a color that still looks like mulch rather than like something that has lost its coating.
My recommendation: skip the dyed mulch. Natural bark, in its natural brown, looks better over time and carries less risk.
Nitrogen Tie-Up: A Real But Manageable Concern
When organic mulch decomposes, the bacteria and fungi doing the work need nitrogen to build their own proteins. If the mulch is high in carbon and low in nitrogen, the microbes pull nitrogen from the soil surface, temporarily reducing the nitrogen available to plants. This is called nitrogen tie-up or nitrogen immobilization.
This is a real effect but it is usually not a problem for established plants, because the tie-up happens only in the top inch or two of soil where the mulch meets the ground, and established plant roots are deeper than that. It is a concern for young seedlings and newly planted annuals with shallow roots, particularly in vegetable beds mulched with high-carbon material like sawdust or wood chips.
How to Avoid Nitrogen Problems
- Use composted or aged mulch rather than fresh wood chips around vegetables.
- If using fresh wood chips, keep them on top of the soil, not mixed in. Incorporating fresh wood into the soil causes much worse nitrogen tie-up than surface application.
- For vegetable beds, use straw, leaves, or compost rather than bark or wood chips.
- If you see nitrogen deficiency, yellowing of older leaves, stunted growth, in a mulched bed, a light application of nitrogen fertilizer corrects it quickly.
When to Mulch
Timing matters less than people think, but there are optimal windows:
Spring Mulching
The most common time to mulch. Wait until the soil has warmed and dried somewhat, usually mid to late spring in most climates. Mulching too early, while the soil is still cold and wet, insulates the cold in and slows plant growth. This is particularly important for vegetable beds, where you want the soil to warm quickly.
Fall Mulching
Useful for protecting recently planted perennials and shrubs from freeze-thaw cycles. Apply after the soil has cooled but before the ground freezes. Fall mulch moderates soil temperature swings that can heave new plants out of the ground.
Summer Mulching
Fine if you missed spring, but less ideal because the soil is already warm and you are not getting the early-season weed suppression benefit. Water the bed before mulching in summer, because dry soil under fresh mulch stays dry, the mulch blocks rainfall from reaching the soil.
The One Time Not to Mulch
Do not mulch over weed seeds that have already germinated. Mulch does not kill existing weeds. If you mulch over a bed full of weed seedlings, they will grow through the mulch and you will have a worse problem. Hoe or pull the weeds first, then mulch.
A Practical Recommendation
For most homeowners in most situations, here is what I would do:
- Use shredded hardwood bark, undyed, at three inches, for foundation beds and general ornamental beds. It is the best balance of cost, appearance, and function.
- Use pine bark nuggets for acid-loving plant beds and for flat areas where washout is not a concern.
- Use arborist wood chips, free or cheap, for back areas, paths, and vegetable garden paths. The soil-building benefit is unmatched.
- Use stone or gravel only for specific design situations, not as a default.
- Avoid rubber mulch and dyed mulches.
And whatever you use, keep it off the tree trunks, do not pile it too deep, and measure before you add more. Mulch is simple, but the difference between done right and done wrong is the difference between a healthy landscape and one that is slowly declining.
