The Drainage Imperative

As a general rule, bigger is always better. A larger pot holds more soil, which holds more water and nutrients, which gives you a larger margin for error. If you are torn between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Container Materials
Plastic pots are lightweight, cheap, and retain moisture well. They are the most practical choice for most container gardens. The downside is that they can become brittle in UV light after several years, and dark colored plastic heats up in the sun, which can overheat roots. Choose light colored plastic or place dark pots in partial shade.
Fabric pots (grow bags) are made from breathable fabric that allows air to reach the root zone. Shape Considerations

Shallow, wide pots are better for root crops (radishes, carrots, lettuce) that do not need deep soil but do need surface area.

Potting Mix Recipes
A good potting mix provides water retention, drainage, aeration, and nutrient holding capacity. You can buy pre mixed potting soil, or you can make your own for better quality and lower cost.
Basic Potting Mix

What Grows Well in Containers
Vegetables That Thrive in Pots
Tomatoes (cherry and determinate types). Cherry tomatoes are the best container tomato because they produce continuously and do not need a huge root system. Determinate varieties (which grow to a fixed size and set all their fruit at once) are also good for containers because they stay compact. Indeterminate varieties can be grown in containers but need large pots (20+ gallons) and sturdy support. Choose varieties specifically bred for containers, which stay compact.
Peppers. Both bell peppers and hot peppers grow well in containers. They have a compact growth habit and moderate root system. A 5 gallon pot supports one pepper plant that will produce 10 to 30 peppers in a season.
Lettuce and salad greens. Leaf lettuce is ideal for containers because it has shallow roots and grows fast. You can harvest outer leaves continuously for weeks. A 12 inch wide pot can grow enough lettuce for several salads per week.
Radishes. Fast growing (25 to 35 days) and shallow rooted, radishes are perfect for containers. Plant them in a wide, shallow pot and harvest in a month.
Bush beans. Compact and productive, bush beans grow well in containers. A 12 inch pot can grow 4 to 6 bean plants.
Swiss chard. A cut and come again green that produces all season. It has a deep taproot, so use a pot at least 10 inches deep.
Herbs. Most herbs are excellent container plants. Basil, cilantro, parsley, and dill are annuals that grow fast and can be harvested repeatedly. Rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage are perennials that can live in the same pot for years. Mint should always be grown in containers (it is invasive in the ground).
Potatoes. Potatoes actually grow better in containers than in the ground because you can control the soil and harvest easily. Use a tall fabric pot or grow bag, and “hill” the potatoes by adding soil as the plant grows. A 10 gallon grow bag can produce 3 to 5 pounds of potatoes.
Strawberries. Strawberries are well suited to containers, especially hanging baskets or strawberry pots (pots with multiple side openings). They have shallow roots and spread by runners, which works well in a container.
Vegetables That Struggle in Containers
Sweet corn. Corn needs deep soil, wind pollination (which requires a block of many plants), and a long root run. It is impractical in containers.
Large vining squash (pumpkins, butternut, acorn). These plants are enormous and produce few fruits per plant. They are not worth the container space. Bush type zucchini and summer squash work in containers, but vining winter squash do not.
Asparagus. Asparagus is a perennial that needs deep, permanent soil and takes 3 years to produce. It is not suitable for containers.
Onions (for bulbs). Onions need a long season and specific day length conditions. They can be grown in containers but are not productive for the space they require. Green onions (scallions) are a better container choice.
Garlic. Like onions, garlic needs a long growing season and is not space efficient in containers.
Melons. Watermelons and cantaloupes need extensive root systems and lots of heat. They can be grown in large containers with a trellis, but they are challenging and low yielding.
Watering Container Plants
Watering is the most critical and most demanding aspect of container gardening. Containers dry out much faster than garden beds, and the watering schedule changes throughout the season.
The Finger Test
The only reliable way to know if a container needs water is the finger test. Stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, water. If it feels moist, wait. Do not water on a fixed schedule (every Monday, for example), because the plant’s water needs change with temperature, humidity, wind, and growth stage.
How Much Water
Water until water runs out the drainage holes. This ensures the entire root ball is moistened, not just the top layer. A common mistake is giving containers a light sprinkle that wets only the top inch of soil, leaving the roots below dry.

If the plant is still wilted in the morning, it needs water. If it has recovered by evening, it was just heat stress, and watering would have overwatered it.
Mulching Containers
A layer of mulch on top of the potting mix reduces water evaporation significantly. Use straw, shredded leaves, or fine bark mulch. A 1 inch layer of mulch can reduce watering frequency by 30 to 50 percent. This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the watering burden.
Feeding Container Plants

Liquid Feeding Schedule
Once the initial fertilizer is depleted, feed container plants every 1 to 2 weeks with a liquid fertilizer. Options:
Fish emulsion (5-1-1) is high in nitrogen and promotes leafy growth. Good for lettuce, herbs, and leafy greens. Dilute 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. Smells bad for a few hours after application.

Matching Plants to Sun Exposure

Full sun (6 to 8+ hours): Tomatoes, peppers, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, rosemary, thyme, strawberries, most flowers.
Partial sun (4 to 6 hours): Lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, radishes, carrots, cilantro, parsley, mint.
Shade (2 to 4 hours): Some lettuce varieties, spinach, mints, and certain leafy greens can tolerate shade, but they will grow slower and produce less.
Moving Containers
One of the advantages of containers is that you can move them. In spring, move heat loving plants (tomatoes, peppers) to the sunniest spot to take advantage of limited warmth. Temperature Management

Heat Management
In hot weather, container soil can reach temperatures that kill roots. Black plastic pots in full sun can have internal soil temperatures of 100+ degrees. To manage heat:

- Move them to a sheltered location. Against a south facing wall, under an eave, or into a garage.

Pests and Diseases in Containers
Container plants are not immune to pests and diseases, but they are easier to monitor and treat than garden plants.
Common Container Pests
Aphids cluster on new growth. Spray off with water or treat with insecticidal soap.
Spider mites thrive in the dry conditions of container plants. They cause stippling (tiny yellow dots) on leaves and fine webbing. Increase humidity by misting plants, and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Whiteflies are tiny white insects that fly up when you disturb the plant. They suck plant sap and transmit diseases. Yellow sticky traps catch adults. Treat with insecticidal soap.
Fungus gnats are small black flies that breed in moist potting soil. The adults are annoying but harmless. The larvae feed on roots and can damage seedlings. Reduce watering (let the top inch of soil dry between waterings) and use yellow sticky traps.
