Building a Pollinator Garden: Plants That Attract Bees

A pollinator garden is the rare landscape project that actually does what it promises. Plant the right flowers, in enough quantity, with blooms spread across the season, and the bees and butterflies will show up. I have watched it happen in my own yard over three years, going from a quiet lawn to a buzzing mess of bumblebees, sweat bees, hover flies, and the occasional hummingbird.

The trick is that “plant flowers and they will come” is only half true. Plenty of gardens full of flowers attract almost nothing, because the flowers are the wrong shape, the wrong size, double-petaled so the pollen is inaccessible, or treated with chemicals that kill the very insects they are supposed to feed. A real pollinator garden takes a bit more thought than picking pretty flowers at the nursery.

Who You Are Actually Feeding

Before picking plants, it helps to know what is showing up. The pollinators in a typical yard fall into a few broad groups:

  • Bumblebees are large, fuzzy, social bees that nest in the ground or in cavities. They fly in cool weather when other bees stay home, and they can buzz-pollinate, vibrating their bodies to release pollen from flowers like tomatoes and blueberries.
  • Honeybees are European imports kept by beekeepers. You will see them if there is a hive within a few miles. They are generalists and visit a wide range of flowers.
  • Native bees are the ones most people do not notice. There are around 4,000 species in North America, most of them solitary. Mason bees, leafcutter bees, sweat bees, mining bees, digger bees. Many are tiny, look like flying ants or small flies, and do more pollination than honeybees in many ecosystems.
  • Butterflies want flat or clustered flowers they can land on with their legs spread. They are pickier than bees.
  • Hummingbirds want tubular red or orange flowers and do not care about scent. They feed on the wing.
  • Hover flies and moths do a lot of unnoticed pollination, especially of small flowers.

A good pollinator garden feeds all of these at some point in the year. That means a range of flower shapes, not just one type.

The Bloom Sequence Problem

This is the part most guides gloss over. A garden that blooms spectacularly in June and then goes quiet in August is not actually feeding pollinators through the season. By late summer, when bumblebee colonies are at peak size and need the most nectar, a lot of gardens have nothing to offer.

The goal is continuous bloom from early spring through late fall. That means planning backward from what flowers when, not just buying whatever looks good at the nursery in May.

Early Spring, March Through April

This is the hardest gap to fill and the most critical. Native bees emerge in early spring when colony resources are low. Anything that blooms now is a lifeline.

  • Crocus. Not native, but one of the earliest nectar sources and bees mob them on warm days.
  • Willow, Salix species. The fuzzy catkins are pollen powerhouses for mining bees and andrenid bees. A pussy willow in the yard is a pollinator magnet in March.
  • Red maple and serviceberry. Native trees that flower before leafing out. Early bees depend on them.
  • Virginia bluebells, Mertensia virginica. A native ephemeral that blooms in woodland edges and goes dormant by summer.
  • Lungwort, Pulmonaria. Early, shade tolerant, and bumblebees love it.

Late Spring, May Through June

The easy season. Everything is blooming and pollinators are abundant.

  • Wild geranium, Geranium maculatum. Native, long bloom, covered in bees.
  • Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis. Native red columbine pulls in hummingbirds.
  • Penstemon, P. digitalis and P. smallii. Tubular flowers, native, hummingbird and bee favorite.
  • Salvia, both native and ornamental. Blooms for weeks if sheared.
  • Catmint, Nepeta. Covers itself in blue flowers for a month, bumblebees do not leave it alone.

Midsummer, July Through August

This is where most gardens fall off. The spring bloomers are done and the fall asters have not started.

  • Bee balm, Monarda fistulosa and M. didyma. The name is earned. Hummingbirds, bumblebees, and moths all work it.
  • Anise hyssop, Agastache foeniculum. Native, fragrant, and blooms for six weeks straight in the worst heat. My single most visited plant.
  • Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea. Native, durable, and butterflies land on the wide flat blooms.
  • Joe-Pye weed, Eutrochium purpureum. Tall native for the back of the border. Butterflies swarm it.
  • Mountain mint, Pycnanthemum virginianum. Not showy but every pollinator in the yard visits it. The most insect-dense plant I grow.
  • Milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa and A. syriaca. Required for monarch caterpillars, but the flowers are nectar-rich for dozens of species.

Late Summer Through Fall, September Through October

Critical for migrating monarchs and for bumblebee queens building fat reserves before winter.

  • Asters, Symphyotrichum species. The backbone of the fall pollinator garden. New England aster and aromatic aster are workhorses.
  • Goldenrod, Solidago species. Not the allergy culprit people think, that is ragweed. Goldenrod is a late-season nectar powerhouse.
  • Sedum, ‘Autumn Joy’ and similar. Flat flowerheads covered in bees and butterflies in September.
  • Ironweed, Vernonia. Tall native with intense purple flowers that butterflies love.

If you cover these four windows, you have a garden that feeds pollinators from the first warm March day to the first hard frost.

Native Plants Matter More Than You Think

Here is a distinction I did not appreciate until I had been doing this for a while. Native pollinators co-evolved with native plants. Many of them cannot use ornamental flowers, or use them less efficiently.

The classic example is the monarch butterfly, whose caterpillars can eat only milkweed. But it goes deeper. Many native bees are specialists that gather pollen from a single genus of plant. The squash bee gathers only from squash flowers. The blueberry bee gathers only from blueberries. The sunflower bee, only sunflowers. Plant only ornamental imports and you feed only the generalists, which are the pollinators that are not in decline.

This does not mean you have to plant only natives. A pollinator garden can be 70 percent native and 30 percent well-chosen ornamentals and still be excellent. But the foundation should be plants that evolved where you live.

Finding Native Plants for Your Region

This is harder than it should be. Most garden centers stock the same ornamentals nationwide and carry few true natives. The best sources are:

  • Native plant nurseries, which exist in most states now. Search your state name plus “native plant nursery.”
  • Native plant society sales, usually held in spring and fall. These are run by volunteers, the plants are often locally grown, and the selection is better than any retail nursery.
  • Mail-order native nurseries, for species you cannot find locally.

Avoid “nativars,” cultivated selections of native species, if you want maximum pollinator value. Some nativars, especially those with double flowers or altered colors, produce less nectar or are less recognizable to native bees. A straight-species Echinacea will outperform a double-bloomed orange cultivar every time.

Designing the Garden

Pollinator gardens do not have to look like wild meadows. They can be designed and intentional. Here is what matters functionally.

Mass Planting, Not One Of Everything

Bees forage efficiently when there are many of the same flower in one place. A clump of seven coneflowers is more attractive than seven individual plants scattered through the garden. Plant in groups of at least three to five of each species, more if you have the space.

Sun and Shelter

Most pollinator plants want full sun. Aim for at least six hours of direct light. If your site is partly shaded, focus on the shade-tolerant natives like wild geranium, columbine, and woodland phlox.

Pollinators also need shelter from wind. A solid fence, a hedge, or the lee side of a building creates a calmer microclimate where bees can forage on breezy days.

A Water Source

Bees need water, and a shallow dish with pebbles breaking the surface gives them a place to drink without drowning. Change it every few days to avoid mosquitoes. A muddy patch somewhere in the yard supplies minerals that some bees need.

Leave Some Bare Ground

Most native bees nest in the ground, not in hives. A patch of bare, undisturbed soil in a sunny spot gives mining bees and digger bees a place to dig their tunnels. Do not mulch every square inch. Leave a few bare spots.

The Pesticide Trap

This is the part that wrecks more pollinator gardens than anything else. People plant for bees, then spray for aphids or Japanese beetles or mosquitoes, and the spray kills the bees.

Systemic Insecticides

The worst offenders are systemic neonicotinoids, which are absorbed into the plant tissue and show up in the nectar and pollen. Many nursery-grown plants, including plants marketed as “pollinator friendly,” have been treated with these. The bees visit the flowers and take the poison home to the hive.

If you buy plants from a conventional nursery, ask whether they have been treated with neonicotinoids. Many will not know. The safest route is to buy from native plant nurseries that do not use them, or to grow from seed.

What to Do About Pests

A pollinator garden will have pests. That is fine. Aphids on the milkweed are food for ladybug larvae. Caterpillar damage on the fennel is the point, if you are planting for butterflies. Tolerance is the strategy.

If something is genuinely destroying a plant, try physical removal first, then insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, both of which degrade quickly and are less harmful when applied in the evening after bees have stopped flying. Never use broad-spectrum insecticides on a pollinator garden. You will kill the thing you are trying to help.

Mosquito Sprays

The outdoor mosquito spray services that have proliferated in the last decade are catastrophic for pollinators. The pyrethroids they use are broad-spectrum and toxic to bees, butterflies, and aquatic insects. If a neighbor uses one, your pollinator garden is at risk. There is not much you can do about a neighbor’s choice, but you can decline the service yourself.

Common Mistakes

I have made most of these, so I am speaking from experience.

Planting too few plants. A garden with one of each species is a collection, not a habitat. Pollinators need enough of each plant to make foraging worthwhile. Buy fewer species and more of each.

Choosing double flowers. A double-flowered rose or chrysanthemum has had its reproductive parts bred into extra petals. There is no pollen and often no nectar. They are useless to pollinators. Stick to single forms.

Forgetting the larvae. Adult butterflies need nectar, but their caterpillars need specific host plants. Monarchs need milkweed. Black swallowtails need dill, fennel, or parsley. Plant host plants if you want butterflies in more than passing numbers.

Mowing everything in fall. Many native bees overwinter in hollow plant stems or in the ground under leaf litter. Cutting everything to the ground and bagging it up removes their winter habitat. Leave the stems standing through winter and cut them back in spring, leaving the lower foot as nesting material.

Expecting instant results. The first year, you may see a few bees. The second year, more. The third year, the garden is established and the pollinators have found it. Patience is part of the process.

A Realistic Plant List for a 100 Square Foot Bed

If you want a concrete starting point, here is a plant list for a sunny 10 by 10 foot bed in zones 5 to 8 that will bloom from April through October. Adjust the species to your region.

  • 3 Virginia bluebells, early spring, then dormant
  • 3 columbine, spring, hummingbird plant
  • 5 wild geranium, late spring
  • 3 Penstemon digitalis, early summer
  • 5 coneflower, midsummer through fall
  • 3 bee balm, midsummer
  • 3 anise hyssop, midsummer through late summer
  • 3 butterfly weed, Asclepias tuberosa, midsummer, monarch host
  • 5 New England aster, fall
  • 3 goldenrod, Solidago rugosa, fall

That is roughly 35 plants in 100 square feet, dense enough to look full and feed pollinators across the full season. Total cost from a native nursery is around 150 to 250 dollars depending on pot size. It will take two seasons to fill in completely.

What You Will Actually See

I want to set realistic expectations, because the photos online make pollinator gardens look like nature documentaries.

Most days, the garden is not humming with visible activity. The bees are there, but many are small and fast and you will not notice them unless you stop and watch. The spectacular moments, when a bumblebee queen is working the bee balm in July, or a monarch is feeding on the aster in September, are occasional, not constant.

What you will notice, over time, is that the garden is less quiet than it used to be. There is sound. There is movement. There is life that was not there before. That is the point. You are building a small functioning ecosystem, and it takes a few years, but it works.

Providing Nesting Habitat

Flowers feed adult pollinators, but most native bees need somewhere to nest and raise their young. A garden full of flowers but with no nesting habitat is a feeding station, not a home. The pollinators will visit and leave. To keep them in your yard, provide nesting sites.

Bee Houses

Bee houses, also called bee hotels, are bundles of hollow stems or drilled wooden blocks that provide nesting tubes for solitary bees like mason bees and leafcutter bees. They are popular and widely sold, but most commercial bee houses are poorly designed and can do more harm than good.

The problems with cheap bee houses: tubes that are too wide or too narrow for native species, no way to clean or replace tubes between seasons (which allows parasites and disease to build up), and materials that do not breathe, causing mold.

If you want a bee house, build or buy one with replaceable paper liners or removable tubes, made of untreated wood, with a roof to keep rain out. Face it east or southeast so it gets morning sun. Clean it out and replace the tubes every year.

Alternatively, and more naturally, leave hollow plant stems standing through winter. Elderberry, raspberry canes, and sumac all have stems that bees excavate for nesting. This is free, requires no maintenance, and works as well or better than a manufactured bee house.

Bare Ground for Ground-Nesting Bees

The majority of native bees nest in the ground, not in stems or hives. They dig tunnels in bare or sparsely vegetated soil, usually in sunny, well-drained spots. A garden with every inch mulched has no place for them.

Leave a few patches of bare ground in sunny locations. An undisturbed strip along a path edge, a bare patch in the vegetable garden, or a south-facing bank. Do not mulch these areas. The ground-nesting bees will find them.

Loose Leaf Litter and Dead Wood

Bumblebees nest in abandoned rodent burrows or under grass tussocks, often at the edge of woods or in unmowed areas. Leaving a wild corner with tall grass, leaf litter, and some dead branches provides nesting habitat for bumblebees and overwintering sites for many other beneficial insects.

Not every yard can support a wild corner, but even a small patch of unmanicured space helps. The back of a border, behind the shed, or along a fence line can be left a little rougher than the rest of the yard.

Learning to Watch

The most rewarding part of a pollinator garden is watching it. Once the garden is established, spend time just observing. Sit near the anise hyssop in July and see what comes. You will notice things you never noticed before.

You will see that bumblebees work flowers in a particular order, following a route. You will see that different bees prefer different flowers, and that the mix of visitors changes through the day as temperatures rise. You will see hover flies, which look like small bees but are actually flies, hovering and darting between flowers. You will see tiny solitary bees, smaller than a grain of rice, that you would never have noticed if you were not sitting still.

Keep a notebook. Note what is blooming and what is visiting. Over a season or two, you will build a picture of your garden’s pollinator community that is more detailed than any catalog or website could give you. You will know which plants earn their place by the number of visitors they attract, and which are just taking up space.

This is the real reward of a pollinator garden. Not the plants, not even the pollinators, but the attention. The garden teaches you to slow down and look closely, and that is a skill worth more than any plant.
