The first year I started seeds indoors, I grew them on a sunny windowsill and every one of them was leggy, pale, and dead within a month. The second year, I bought a cheap shop light and hung it two inches above the seedlings, and the difference was immediate. The plants were stocky, green, and grew like they were supposed to.
That was the lesson that turned seed starting from a frustrating gamble into a reliable part of my spring. The windowsill was the problem, and the light was the solution. Most seed starting failures trace back to a handful of fixable issues, light, timing, temperature, and the transition outside. Get those right and the rest follows.
This is a practical guide to starting vegetable and flower seeds indoors, focused on the equipment and timing that actually produce transplants worth planting.
Why Start Seeds Indoors at All
You can direct-sow most vegetables in the garden and skip the indoor phase entirely. So why bother? A few reasons:
- Longer season. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants need a long warm season to mature. In most of the country, direct-sown plants will not produce before frost. Starting indoors gives them a 6 to 10 week head start.
- Earlier harvest. Even for plants that can be direct-sown, like broccoli and cabbage, transplants produce weeks earlier than seed.
- Better germination. Some seeds, like onions and celery, germinate slowly and unreliably in cold spring soil. Indoors, in controlled conditions, germination is reliable.
- Cost. A tomato transplant costs 3 to 5 dollars. A tomato seed costs 20 cents. If you grow more than a few plants, seeds save money.
- Variety. Nurseries carry a handful of varieties. Seed catalogs carry hundreds. Starting your own opens up a world of choices.
The tradeoff is time and equipment. You are trading money and effort for variety and quantity. For most serious vegetable gardeners, it is worth it.
Timing: Counting Back From Last Frost
The most common mistake is starting seeds too early. Leggy, rootbound transplants that have been sitting in their pots too long do not transplant well and often fail to thrive. The goal is a plant that is the right size, 4 to 6 inches tall with 3 to 5 true leaves, at the moment it is safe to plant outside.
Finding Your Last Frost Date
Your last frost date is the average date of the last spring frost in your area. This is the anchor for all spring planting timing. You can find it by searching your ZIP code on a frost date map, or through your state extension service.
Note that this is an average, not a guarantee. In any given year, the actual last frost can be a week or two on either side. For tender plants like tomatoes and peppers, I plan to transplant a week after the average last frost date, to be safe.
Counting Back
Seed packets tell you how many weeks before last frost to start the seeds indoors. Common timings:

A typical last frost date of May 1 means tomatoes should be started around March 1 to March 15, peppers in late February, onions in early February, and squash in early April.
The “Too Early” Trap
It is tempting to start seeds in January because you are itching to garden. Resist. A tomato plant started in January will be two feet tall and rootbound by May, and it will transplant poorly. Start on schedule. The plant will be healthier and the harvest will not be any earlier for the extra months of indoor growth.
If you want to grow something in January, grow microgreens or sprouts. They are ready in a week and scratch the gardening itch without producing a transplant that suffers.
The Equipment List
This is where the seed starting setup either works or fails. The good news is that the equipment is a one-time purchase that lasts years.
Grow Lights
This is the single most important piece of equipment. Seedlings need more light than a windowsill provides, even a south-facing one. Without enough light, seedlings stretch toward the window, becoming leggy and weak. The fix is artificial light, positioned close to the plants.
You do not need expensive grow lights. Standard fluorescent shop lights, the kind that hold T8 or T5 tubes, work fine for seedlings. The bulbs labeled “cool white” or “daylight” (5000K to 6500K color temperature) provide the right spectrum. LED shop lights work too and use less electricity.
The key is keeping the light close, 2 to 3 inches above the tops of the seedlings, and raising it as they grow. This proximity is what produces stocky plants. A light 18 inches away, like a ceiling fixture, produces the same leggy growth as a windowsill.
I use simple shop lights on adjustable chains, raised a link at a time as the seedlings grow. The lights run 14 to 16 hours a day, on a timer, and off at night. Plants need a dark period to rest, so do not run lights 24/7.
Specialty grow lights, the purple LED panels, work too but cost more. For seed starting, they offer no advantage over shop lights. Save the money for something else.
Seed Starting Mix
Do not use potting soil or garden soil for seed starting. Use a seed starting mix, which is a fine-textured, sterile, soilless medium designed for germination. Typically a mix of peat or coir, perlite, and vermiculite.
Garden soil is too heavy, contains weed seeds, and may harbor disease. Potting soil is too coarse and often contains fertilizer that can burn seedlings. Seed starting mix is the right texture for tiny roots and is sterile, preventing the damping-off disease that kills seedlings at the soil line.
You can mix your own from peat or coir, perlite, and vermiculite, but the bagged mix is inexpensive and reliable. One bag starts a lot of seeds.
Containers
Anything that holds soil and drains will work. Options:
- Plastic cell packs. The standard, sold in nurseries and seed catalogs. Cheap, reusable, and available in various cell sizes. 72-cell trays are good for small seeds, 50-cell or 32-cell for larger ones.
- Peat pots and coco coir pots. Plant the whole pot in the ground, and it decomposes. In practice, they dry out fast and the rim wicks moisture away from the soil. I prefer plastic.
- Soil blocks. Compressed blocks of soilless mix with no container. Roots air-prune at the edge, preventing rootbound plants. Excellent but takes practice to make and manage.
- Repurposed containers. Yogurt cups, egg cartons, Solo cups with holes poked. All work if they drain. Wash and sanitize first.
Whatever you use, it must have drainage holes. Seedlings sitting in water rot.
Heat Mats
Most seeds germinate best at soil temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees, which is warmer than most houses. A seedling heat mat, a thin waterproof electric mat that goes under the tray, warms the soil to the right range and dramatically improves germination rates for heat-loving crops like peppers and eggplant.
Heat mats are not strictly necessary. Seeds will germinate at room temperature, just slower and less reliably for warm-season crops. But for the cost, about 30 dollars for a standard mat, the improvement in germination is worth it.
The important note: heat mats are for germination only. Once the seedlings are up, remove them from the mat or turn it off. Seedlings want cooler temperatures than germination, around 65 to 70 degrees, to grow stocky and strong. Heat after germination produces leggy growth.
Humidity Domes
A clear plastic dome over the tray holds moisture during germination. Seeds need consistent moisture to germinate, and a dome prevents the surface from drying out. Once the seeds are up and have their first true leaves, remove the dome. Seedlings need air circulation to prevent fungal disease.
Timer
A plug-in timer for the lights is essential unless you want to remember to turn them on and off twice a day. Set it for 14 to 16 hours on, 8 to 10 hours off. Consistency matters, so use a timer rather than your memory.
Fan
A small fan blowing gently across the seedlings serves two purposes. It strengthens the stems, the movement makes the plants grow sturdier, and it improves air circulation, reducing damping-off disease. This is not strictly necessary but it helps, especially in a still room.
The Process
Sowing
Fill the containers with moistened seed starting mix, pressing it in firmly but not packing it. Sow seeds at the depth recommended on the packet, usually 2 to 3 times the seed diameter. Tiny seeds like lettuce go on the surface or barely covered. Larger seeds like squash go an inch deep.
Label everything. You will not remember what is in which tray. Use a marker that will not fade, and write the variety and the date.
Cover with the humidity dome and place on the heat mat if using. Check daily for germination. Most seeds germinate in 5 to 14 days.
After Germination
The moment the seedlings emerge, they need light. Move them under the grow lights immediately, 2 to 3 inches above the tops. Remove the heat mat. Remove or vent the humidity dome once most seedlings are up.
Water from the bottom by setting the tray in a shallow pan of water for 20 minutes, then removing. This encourages deep root growth and keeps the soil surface drier, reducing disease. Top watering is fine but be gentle to avoid flattening the seedlings.
Thinning
If you sowed multiple seeds per cell, thin to one seedling per cell once they have their first true leaves. Use scissors to cut the extras at the soil line rather than pulling them, which disturbs the roots of the one you are keeping.
Fertilizing
Seed starting mix has no nutrients, so once the seedlings have true leaves, they need feeding. Use a dilute liquid fertilizer, half strength, once a week. Fish emulsion or a balanced water-soluble fertilizer works. Do not over-fertilize. The goal is steady growth, not explosive growth, which produces weak plants.
Potting Up
If seedlings outgrow their cells before it is time to transplant outside, pot them up into a larger container. This usually happens with tomatoes and peppers, which grow fast. Move them into 3 or 4 inch pots with potting soil, burying the stem deeper than it was before. Tomatoes will grow roots along the buried stem, producing a sturdier plant.
Hardening Off: The Critical Step
This is the step that kills more seedlings than any other. Plants grown indoors are soft. They have not been exposed to wind, direct sun, or temperature fluctuations. Move them straight from the grow light to the garden and they will sunburn, wilt, and possibly die.
Hardening off is the gradual transition from indoor to outdoor conditions. It takes 7 to 10 days and it is not optional.
The Schedule
- Day 1 to 2. Place seedlings outside in a sheltered, shaded spot for 2 to 3 hours. Bring them back inside. No direct sun, no wind.
- Day 3 to 4. Increase to 4 to 6 hours, still in shade or very light sun. Bring in at night.
- Day 5 to 6. Introduce morning sun, 1 to 2 hours. Increase outdoor time to most of the day.
- Day 7 to 8. Full day outside, including direct sun, unless weather is harsh. Bring in at night if temperatures will drop below 50 degrees.
- Day 9 to 10. Leave out overnight if nights are above 50. The plants are now hardened and ready to transplant.
What to Watch For
During hardening off, watch for sunburn, white or brown patches on the leaves. If you see it, slow down and reduce sun exposure for a day. Sunburn does not kill the plant but it sets it back.
Wind can also damage seedlings. A sheltered spot for the first few days prevents stems from breaking. If a stem does bend, a small stake can prop it up while it recovers.
Transplanting
Transplant on a cloudy day or in late afternoon, not in full sun. Water the seedlings before and after transplanting. Set them slightly deeper than they were in the pot, especially tomatoes. Provide some protection from wind and intense sun for a few days if possible, with row cover or a temporary shade.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Leggy Seedlings
The most common problem. Cause: insufficient light, or light too far away, or too warm after germination. Fix: move lights closer, 2 inches above the tops, and lower the temperature to 65 to 70 degrees. Leggy seedlings can sometimes be saved by potting up and burying the stem, but prevention is better.
Damping Off
Seedlings suddenly wilt and fall over at the soil line, often overnight. Cause: fungal disease, usually from overwatering, poor air circulation, or contaminated equipment. Fix: improve air circulation with a fan, water from the bottom, do not overwater, and sanitize trays between uses. Once damping off hits, affected seedlings are gone. There is no cure.
Yellowing Leaves
Cause: usually lack of nitrogen, since seed starting mix has none. Fix: start fertilizing at half strength once true leaves appear.
Seeds Not Germinating
Cause: old seed, too cold, too wet, too dry, or planted too deep. Fix: check the seed packet for freshness, use a heat mat, keep soil consistently moist but not saturated, and sow at the right depth. Some seeds, like peppers, are slow and just need patience.
Mold on Soil Surface
White fuzzy growth on the soil. Cause: overwatering and poor air circulation. Usually harmless to seedlings but indicates conditions that favor damping off. Fix: reduce watering, increase air flow, and consider a thin layer of perlite on the surface.
What to Start Indoors Versus Direct Sow
Not everything benefits from indoor starting. As a general rule:
Start indoors: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, leeks, celery, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, basil, and most flower transplants like marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos.
Direct sow: root crops (carrots, beets, radishes, turnips), peas, beans, corn, squash, cucumbers, melons, spinach, lettuce (can do either), and most root vegetables. These either do not transplant well or grow fast enough that indoor starting offers no advantage.
The exception is squash, cucumbers, and melons, which can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting if you want an earlier harvest. They grow fast and do not like root disturbance, so use peat pots or soil blocks that can go straight into the ground.
A Realistic Setup Cost
For a basic but functional seed starting setup that will last years:
- Two shop lights with LED tubes: 50 to 80 dollars
- Adjustable chain or shelving to hang lights: 20 to 40 dollars
- Plug timer: 10 dollars
- Heat mat: 30 dollars
- Humidity dome and tray: 10 dollars
- Seed starting mix, one bag: 10 dollars
- Cell packs or reusable trays: 15 to 30 dollars
- Seeds: 20 to 50 dollars depending on variety
Total is about 165 to 260 dollars for the first year. After that, only seeds and mix need replacing, so the per-year cost drops to 30 to 50 dollars. Compare that to buying transplants, at 3 to 5 dollars each, and the system pays for itself in a year or two if you grow more than a dozen plants.
Keeping Records
Seed starting is a system that improves with data. Keep a notebook or spreadsheet with what you planted, when, and how it performed. Note germination rates, which varieties grew well as transplants, which were leggy or slow, and when you transplanted them outside. After a season or two, you will have a customized schedule that is more accurate than any generic guide, because it is based on your conditions, your equipment, and your climate.
I review my seed notes every January when I order seeds. I drop the varieties that underperformed, add one or two new ones to try, and adjust planting dates based on what worked last year. The notebook is the difference between repeating the same mistakes and getting better every season.
Saving Your Own Seed
Once you have the seed-starting system working, the next step is saving seed from your best plants. This is how gardeners develop strains adapted to their specific conditions. Open-pollinated and heirloom varieties breed true, meaning the seeds produce plants like the parent. Hybrid varieties do not, so do not save seed from them.
Start with easy seeds: beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers. These are mostly self-pollinating and do not cross-pollinate easily, so the seed comes true. Let a few of your best plants go to seed, collect it when dry, and store it in a cool, dry place. Next year, start those seeds indoors and see how they do. Over a few seasons, you will have seeds selected for your garden, your soil, and your climate, which is as good as it gets.
The Payoff
There is a particular satisfaction in eating a tomato that you started from a seed in February, nurtured under lights in March, hardened off in April, planted in May, and picked in July. The connection to the process is different from buying a transplant at the nursery. You grew it.
The other payoff is variety. My garden has tomatoes I have never seen in a nursery, peppers in shapes and colors that do not exist at the garden center, and flowers that started as names in a catalog and ended up as color in the yard. None of that happens without starting seeds.
It is work, no question. February and March are busy in the seed room. But the work is rewarding, and the results, when the equipment is right and the timing is right, are reliable. That is the goal. Not a gamble every spring, but a system that produces the plants you want, when you want them.
