The First Decision: Indoor TV in an Enclosure or a True Outdoor TV
This is the decision that determines everything else, and it is where most people try to save money and regret it.
Indoor TV in a Weatherproof Enclosure
An enclosure is a sealed box with a clear front panel that protects an indoor TV from rain, dust, and temperature extremes. The TV sits inside, and the enclosure seals around it with gaskets. Some enclosures include fans and heaters for climate control.
The appeal is cost. A 55 inch indoor TV costs 300 to 500 dollars. A weatherproof enclosure for the same size costs 300 to 800 dollars. Total investment: 600 to 1,300 dollars. A true outdoor TV of the same size costs 1,500 to 4,000 dollars. The enclosure route looks like a huge savings on paper.
The reality is more complicated. Enclosures have several problems that make them a poor choice for most installations.
Heat buildup. TVs generate significant heat, and a sealed enclosure traps that heat. Without active cooling (fans that move air through filtered vents), the internal temperature can exceed the TV’s operating limit on a sunny day. I have measured 120 degrees inside an enclosure on a 90 degree day with no active cooling. Most indoor TVs are rated for operation up to 104 degrees. The TV does not fail immediately, but the heat stress shortens component life dramatically.
Condensation. This is the killer that enclosure manufacturers do not talk about enough. When the temperature drops at night, the air inside the enclosure cools and releases moisture. If the enclosure is not perfectly sealed (and none are, because you have to run cables through it), humid air gets in and condenses on the cold TV panel and electronics. Over time, this moisture corrodes connections and creates the water spots I mentioned earlier.
Usability. An enclosure adds 4 to 6 inches of depth to the TV and a layer of anti glare plastic in front of the screen. The plastic reduces image quality and can create reflections. You also have to open the enclosure to use the remote, change inputs, or access buttons, which means breaking the seal regularly.
Enclosures are best for: Commercial installations where the TV is used occasionally and budget is the overriding concern, or for very well covered patios in mild climates where the enclosure is mostly protecting against dust and humidity.
True Outdoor TVs
A purpose built outdoor TV is designed from the ground up for outdoor use. The chassis is sealed, the inputs are protected with weatherproof covers, the panel is treated for UV resistance, and the internal components are rated for a wider temperature range. Many outdoor TVs also have significantly brighter panels than indoor TVs to combat sunlight glare.
Outdoor TVs come in two ratings:
Damp rated outdoor TVs are designed for covered patios where they will never be hit by direct rain. They handle humidity, temperature swings, and dust, but are not sealed against water spray. These cost 1,500 to 2,500 dollars for a 55 inch model.
Wet rated outdoor TVs can withstand direct rain and even being washed with a hose. They are fully sealed and can be mounted in fully exposed locations. These cost 2,500 to 4,500 dollars for a 55 inch model.
The honest truth: if your TV will be under any kind of solid roof and at least 3 feet back from the open edge, a damp rated outdoor TV is sufficient. You only need a wet rated TV if the mount location is exposed to direct rain. Spending extra on a wet rated TV for a fully covered patio is wasted money.
Brightness: The Spec That Matters Most Outdoors
Indoor TVs typically produce 250 to 400 nits of brightness. That is fine in a living room with controlled lighting. Outdoors, even in shade, ambient light is far higher than indoors. A standard brightness TV looks dim and washed out under a covered patio during the day.
Outdoor TVs produce 700 to 2,500 nits. A damp rated outdoor TV for a covered patio should produce at least 1,000 nits to be comfortably visible during the day. If your patio gets any direct sun on the screen, look for 1,500 nits or higher.
This is the one area where an indoor TV in an enclosure fundamentally cannot compete. No enclosure makes an indoor TV brighter. If you want to watch TV outdoors during the day, you need an outdoor TV with a high nit panel.
Planning the Installation Location
Once you have chosen the TV type, the location is the next critical decision. A few degrees of sun exposure or a few inches of overhang can be the difference between a TV that lasts ten years and one that fails in one season.
Sun Exposure Analysis
Spend a full day watching the proposed mount location before you commit. Take photos every two hours from morning to evening. Note when, if ever, direct sun hits the wall where the TV will mount.
Direct sun on a TV screen makes it unwatchable due to glare, even on a high nit outdoor model. Direct sun on the TV body raises the internal temperature and stresses the components. If your proposed location gets direct sun for more than an hour per day, you need to add shade (covered later in this guide) or choose a different wall.
Mounting Height
Viewing height outdoors is different from indoors because people are often seated in lounge furniture or standing, not sitting upright on a sofa. Measure the eye height of a seated person in your outdoor furniture and mount the TV so the center of the screen is at or slightly above that height.
For typical outdoor seating (patio chairs and lounges), this puts the center of the screen at about 50 to 60 inches from the ground. For a bar or standing area, 60 to 66 inches is better.
Do not mount the TV too high. The “mount it high so everyone can see it” logic leads to neck strain. The center of the screen should not be more than 15 degrees above the viewers’ eye line when they are seated in their normal position.
Distance From the Open Edge
Even under a covered patio, the edge of the roof is where wind driven rain enters. The TV should be mounted at least 24 inches back from the open edge of the cover, and more is better. If your patio is only 8 feet deep and the cover is at the edge, there is no good mount location on that wall.
Wall Material Considerations
The wall material determines what mounting hardware you need.
- Stud framing with siding: Use lag bolts into the studs, same as an indoor mount. Find the studs with a stud finder and verify with a small test hole. Use 3/8 inch lag bolts at least 2.5 inches into the stud.
- Brick or stone veneer: Use sleeve anchors or wedge anchors rated for the weight. Drill into the mortar joints if possible, because the brick itself can crack. Use at least 4 anchors for a 55 inch TV.
- Stucco over framing: You must find the studs behind the stucco. Do not rely on stucco alone to hold the weight. Use a deep scanning stud finder.
- Concrete block: Use toggle bolts designed for hollow block, or epoxy anchors if the block is solid. Standard concrete screws may not hold in the hollow sections of block.
The mount itself must be rated for outdoor use. Indoor mounts are typically powder coated steel, which is fine indoors but can rust outdoors. Look for mounts with stainless steel hardware and a marine grade finish. A rusting mount can stain the wall and eventually fail.
Running Power and Signal to the TV
This is the part of the installation that most DIYers underestimate, and it is also the part that causes the most problems if done wrong.
Power
You need a weatherproof electrical outlet behind or near the TV. This outlet must be: – GFCI protected (ground fault circuit interrupter) – Covered with an in use weatherproof cover (a cover that closes around a plugged in cord) – On a dedicated circuit if possible, or at least on a circuit that will not be overloaded by other loads
Running the electrical to the TV location is the most labor intensive part of the job. If the wall is an exterior house wall, you may be able to cut through from the inside to install a remodel box. If the wall is a freestanding patio wall or column, you need to trench or run conduit.
Warning: Never use an extension cord to power an outdoor TV, even temporarily. Extension cords are not rated for permanent outdoor use, they create a trip hazard, and the connection is not weatherproof. If you are not willing to install a proper outlet, hire an electrician.
Signal: HDMI, Wireless, or Streaming
You need to get a video signal to the TV. There are three common approaches.
Direct HDMI cable run. This is the most reliable method if the TV is close to your source equipment (cable box, streaming device, receiver). Run a rated outdoor HDMI cable through conduit from the source to the TV. Use conduit, not bare cable, because outdoor HDMI cables degrade from UV and moisture even if rated for outdoor use. Conduit also lets you replace the cable later without cutting walls.
The maximum reliable HDMI run is about 50 feet for standard cable. Beyond that, you need an active HDMI extender or fiber optic HDMI cable. Fiber optic HDMI can run 300 feet without signal loss but costs significantly more.
Wireless HDMI extender. A transmitter at the source sends video wirelessly to a receiver at the TV. This avoids cable runs entirely. Quality varies enormously. Cheap wireless extenders have range issues, latency, and interference from other wireless devices. Quality extenders that use dedicated 5 GHz or 60 GHz bands work well up to 100 feet line of sight, but they cost 200 to 500 dollars.
Streaming device at the TV. The simplest approach for many people is to connect a streaming device directly to the TV and stream over Wi Fi. This eliminates the need for long cable runs. The catch is that you need a weatherproof location for the streaming device, and it must be powered. Some outdoor TVs have integrated streaming platforms, which is the cleanest solution.
If you use a streaming device, make sure your patio Wi Fi signal is strong enough for reliable 4K streaming. Outdoor Wi Fi is often weaker than indoor, and a weak signal causes buffering and reduced resolution.
Conduit: Always Run Conduit
Even if you choose wireless or streaming today, run a piece of empty conduit from the TV location to your source equipment or to an accessible junction point. Conduit costs about 10 dollars and takes an hour to install. It lets you add or change cables in the future without cutting into walls. Every professional installer I know insists on this, and every DIYer who skipped it wishes they had not.
Use 3/4 inch or 1 inch PVC conduit with sweep elbows (not sharp 90 degree elbows, which make cable pulling difficult). Seal both ends with removable covers to keep insects and moisture out when not in use.
Shade Solutions for the TV
Even a high brightness outdoor TV is hard to watch in direct sun. Shade improves visibility, reduces heat, and extends the life of the TV.
Built In Shade From the Patio Cover
If your patio has a solid roof that shades the TV wall during viewing hours, you may not need additional shade. Check the shadow pattern throughout the day, especially during the hours when you most want to watch TV.
Retractable Awning
A retractable awning over the patio extends to shade the TV and viewing area during the day and retracts in the evening. This is a flexible solution but adds 2,000 to 5,000 dollars to the project cost.
Shade Sail
A shade sail positioned between the sun and the TV can block direct light during peak hours. Shade sails cost 100 to 400 dollars and can be installed by a DIYer. The downside is that they are semi permanent and may not block sun at all angles.
TV Specific Sun Shade
Some outdoor TV manufacturers sell sun shades that attach to the mount and extend above and to the sides of the TV. These are like a small awning just for the TV. They cost 100 to 300 dollars and are effective for blocking overhead sun. They do not help with low angle sun in the early morning or late evening.
Anti Reflective Considerations
No shade solution eliminates all glare. Outdoor TV screens have anti reflective coatings, but they are not as aggressive as indoor TV coatings because aggressive anti reflective coatings reduce brightness. The best defense against glare is positioning the TV so it does not face the open sky or a reflective surface like a pool.
The Mounting Process: Step by Step
This assumes you have chosen the TV, the mount, the location, and run the power and signal infrastructure. Here is the actual mounting process.
Step 1: Mount the Wall Plate
- Mark the stud locations or drill points on the wall.
- Verify the mount is level using a torpedo level. A crooked mount is immediately obvious and impossible to fix without redoing the whole job.
- Drill pilot holes for the lag bolts or anchors.
- Install the wall plate with the appropriate hardware. Tighten lag bolts firmly but do not overtighten, which can strip the wood or crack masonry.
- Test the mount by hanging your body weight on it (if it is a stud mount). It should not move at all.
Step 2: Attach the Mount Brackets to the TV
- Lay the TV face down on a soft, clean surface.
- Attach the mount brackets to the back of the TV using the included bolts. Most outdoor TVs use standard VESA mounting patterns.
- Use the correct length bolts. Too long and they bottom out against the TV back panel, potentially damaging internal components. Too short and they do not engage enough threads.
- Check that the brackets are secure and level.
Step 3: Prepare the Cable Connections
- Connect the power and HDMI cables to the TV before lifting it onto the mount. Reaching behind a mounted outdoor TV to plug in cables is difficult and risks damaging the weatherproof port covers.
- Use a drip loop in all cables. A drip loop is a U shaped dip in the cable below the connection point, so any water running down the cable drips off the bottom of the loop instead of into the connector.
- Seal cable entry points into conduit with silicone or weatherproof putty.
Step 4: Hang the TV
- With two people, lift the TV and hook the brackets onto the wall plate.
- Secure the safety locking mechanism on the mount (usually a bolt or locking tab that prevents the TV from being lifted off the mount).
- Level the TV one more time. Some mounts have fine adjustment screws for leveling.
Step 5: Weatherproof the Installation
- Apply silicone sealant around the top and sides of the wall plate where it meets the wall. Do not seal the bottom, because you want any water that gets behind the plate to be able to drain out.
- Verify all weatherproof port covers on the TV are closed and seated properly.
- Check that the in use weatherproof cover on the electrical outlet closes fully around the power cord.
Warranty Considerations: What Voids Your Coverage
Outdoor TV warranties are more restrictive than indoor TV warranties, and the fine print matters.
Common Warranty Voiding Actions
- Mounting an indoor TV outdoors: This voids the warranty immediately. No indoor TV manufacturer covers outdoor use, even in an enclosure.
- Using a mount not rated for the TV weight: If the TV falls due to an undersized mount, the warranty does not cover the damage.
- Removing the weatherproof port covers: Many outdoor TV warranties specifically require all port covers to be installed. Using an uncovered HDMI port and having it corrode is not covered.
- Operating outside the temperature range: Outdoor TVs have specified operating temperature ranges, typically 24 to 122 degrees for damp rated models. Operating outside this range can void the warranty.
- Using non rated cables: Some manufacturers specify that only their cables or cables meeting certain ratings be used. Using a standard indoor HDMI cable that corrodes may not be covered.
- Modifying the TV: Drilling into the chassis, adding aftermarket fans, or opening the TV for any reason voids the warranty.
Read the warranty document before installation, not after a problem occurs. Know what is and is not covered, and follow the manufacturer’s installation guidelines exactly.
Maintenance and Care
An outdoor TV needs more attention than an indoor TV. These maintenance tasks will extend the life of your investment significantly.
Monthly Tasks
- Inspect all weatherproof covers and seals. Replace any that are cracked or deformed.
- Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth and a cleaner specified for outdoor TV screens. Do not use glass cleaner, which can damage anti reflective coatings.
- Check the mount for rust or loose hardware.
- Verify that the electrical outlet cover is closing properly.
Seasonal Tasks
- If you live in a climate with freezing winters, consider removing the TV and storing it indoors from November through March. Many outdoor TVs are rated for storage at low temperatures, but the thermal cycling of freeze thaw cycles stresses seals and components.
- Inspect and reseal the wall plate sealant annually.
- Check all cable connections for corrosion. Disconnect and reconnect each cable to verify the contacts are clean.

- Check for water intrusion behind the TV and in the conduit.

If your mounting location is exposed to any direct rain, spend the extra money on a wet rated TV. The peace of mind and longevity are worth it.
Skip the enclosure route unless you have a specific reason. It seems cheaper upfront but costs more in frustration and replacement TVs over time. The outdoor TV industry exists for a reason, and the reason is that indoor TVs do not survive outdoors, even in a box.
Treat the installation as a system. The TV is only as durable as its weakest link, whether that is an unsealed cable, a rusting mount, or an uncovered port. Do every part of the job correctly and your outdoor TV will give you years of reliable service, turning your patio into a genuine outdoor living room instead of just a place to eat.
