To take a hardwood cutting, select pencil-thick stems from the current or previous season’s growth. Make cuttings six to ten inches long, with the bottom cut just below a node and the top cut just above a node. It is conventional to make the bottom cut at a 45-degree angle and the top cut straight across, so you can tell which end is up when planting. This distinction matters, because cuttings planted upside down will not root.
Bundle hardwood cuttings in groups of ten or twenty, label them, and store them in moist sawdust, sand, or peat in a cool location (35 to 45 degrees) for the winter.
