The Keyhole Concept: How a Notch and a Basket Change Everything
A keyhole garden is a circular raised bed, typically six feet in diameter and two to three feet tall, with a notch cut into one side that gives the bed its name. The shape, viewed from above, looks like an old-fashioned keyhole. The notch is wide enough to walk into, usually two feet across, which puts the center of the bed within arm’s reach from the path.
At the center of the circle sits a vertical compost basket, a tube of wire mesh or perforated material about one foot in diameter that runs from the bottom of the bed to the top. This basket is the engine of the system. You fill it with kitchen scraps, garden waste, manure, and water. As the material decomposes, nutrients leach outward through the surrounding soil, feeding the plants growing in the bed. Water poured into the basket travels down and out radially, irrigating the root zone from the inside out. The compost basket does double duty as a nutrient dispenser and a centralized watering point.

Dry-stacked stone and block walls rely on weight and friction for stability, so keep each course level and overlap the joints. Build up to two or three feet in height, depending on your material and preference. Mortared walls last longer but require more skill and curing time.
For wood walls, use rot-resistant species like cedar or locust, or treated lumber rated for ground contact. Build a circular form using vertical stakes driven into the ground every two feet around the perimeter, with horizontal boards screwed to the inside. The notch is simply a gap in the wall where you leave out a section of stakes and boards. Brace the ends of the notch opening to prevent the walls from spreading when filled.
The compost basket goes in the center. Form a cylinder of wire mesh one foot in diameter and as tall as the bed wall, plus six inches to extend above the soil line. Water the filled bed thoroughly to settle the soil, then top up any areas that have dropped below the rim. The soil will settle further over the first few weeks, and you can add more compost as needed. Fill the compost basket with a mix of brown and green materials, shredded paper or cardboard, kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and a handful of soil to inoculate it with decomposer organisms. Water the basket contents to start the decomposition.
How the Composting Core Works Year-Round
The central basket is the heart of the keyhole garden, and understanding its function makes the whole system click. The basket is a vertical compost pile, open at the top for adding material and porous on the sides for nutrient and water exchange. Everything you put in the basket decomposes in place, and the products of decomposition move outward into the surrounding soil through three mechanisms.
Gravity carries water downward. When you pour water into the basket, it flows through the compost and into the soil at the base of the bed, spreading radially outward through the root zone. This is the irrigation function. A gallon of water poured into the basket reaches roots throughout the bed without wetting the surface, which reduces evaporation and keeps the soil surface dry enough to discourage weeds and slugs.
Capillary action moves nutrients sideways. As compost decomposes, dissolved nutrients travel through the soil moisture outward from the basket. The concentration of nutrients is highest near the basket and decreases toward the walls, creating a gradient. Plants with high nutrient needs, like tomatoes and squash, go near the center. Leafy greens and herbs that need less fertility go toward the outer edge. This natural zoning happens automatically because the nutrient source is concentrated at the center.
Root growth follows the nutrients. Plant roots grow toward the compost basket, reaching into the rich zone around it and tapping the moisture and fertility stored there. The soil near the basket becomes a dense mat of fine roots, all feeding from the decomposing organic matter. This means the compost is not just fertilizing the bed, it is actively drawing roots into a zone of concentrated biological activity, where mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria are most abundant.
The composting process continues year-round in most climates. In summer, the warm temperatures speed decomposition, and you can add material weekly. The basket contents shrink as material breaks down, and you top it up regularly. In winter, decomposition slows but does not stop, particularly in the insulated mass of a raised bed. The soil acts as a thermal buffer, keeping the compost active through freezes that would stop an exposed pile. In cold climates, the basket may go dormant in deep winter, but it resumes as soon as the bed thaws.
Managing the basket is simple. Add kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, coffee grounds, and eggshells whenever you have them. Avoid meat, dairy, and oils, which attract pests and smell. Keep the ratio roughly balanced between greens (nitrogen-rich, fresh material) and browns (carbon-rich, dry material). Add a handful of soil or finished compost occasionally to introduce decomposer organisms. Water the basket when you water the bed, or whenever the contents look dry. The compost should be moist but not soggy, like a wrung-out sponge.
The basket never needs emptying in a functioning keyhole garden. Finished compost migrates out through the mesh into the surrounding soil, and you simply add fresh material on top. Over years, the soil in the bed becomes richer and darker as the compost continuously feeds it. The only maintenance is keeping the basket filled and occasionally loosening the top few inches if the surface becomes compacted.
Planting, Watering, and Maintaining the Bed
Planting a keyhole garden uses the nutrient gradient to your advantage. The zones radiate outward from the basket, and matching crops to zones maximizes productivity.
The inner ring, within eight inches of the basket, is the richest zone. Plant heavy feeders here, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, and broccoli. These crops have high nutrient demands and deep root systems that reach into the compost zone. Tomatoes in particular thrive near the basket, often outperforming plants in conventional beds because of the steady nutrient supply.
The middle ring, eight to sixteen inches from the basket, suits medium feeders. Bush beans, cucumbers, kale, chard, and cabbage grow well here. The soil is fertile but not as concentrated, which suits crops that produce well with moderate fertility.
The outer ring, near the walls, is the lightest zone. Plant herbs, lettuce, radishes, carrots, and onions here. These crops prefer lighter soil and lower nitrogen, and the outer ring gives them the conditions they prefer. The wall itself provides a microclimate, with the stones or blocks absorbing heat during the day and radiating it at night, which extends the season for the plants growing against it.
Vertical space is underused in most keyhole gardens. The walls are sturdy enough to support a trellis, and climbing crops like pole beans, cucumbers, and indeterminate tomatoes trained up a trellis at the back of the bed dramatically increase yield from the same footprint. A trellis across the back third of the circle, opposite the notch, gives climbing plants full sun without shading the rest of the bed.
Watering the keyhole is different from watering a conventional bed. The primary watering method is through the basket. Pour a gallon or two of water into the compost basket every few days, or daily during hot weather. The water moves through the compost, picking up nutrients, and distributes through the root zone from the inside out. This deep watering encourages roots to grow downward and inward, making plants more drought-tolerant than surface-watered crops.
During establishment, the first month after planting, water the soil surface as well to keep transplants alive while their roots reach the moisture zone near the basket. Once plants are established, surface watering can stop almost entirely, and basket watering takes over. In hot, dry climates, a layer of mulch on the surface reduces evaporation and keeps the surface soil from cracking.
Maintenance is minimal once the bed is established. Keep the compost basket filled with kitchen and garden waste. Add a topdressing of compost to the bed surface once a year, in spring or fall, to replenish the soil that has settled and been consumed by plant growth. Check the wall annually for settling or damage, and repair as needed. The wire basket will eventually corrode and need replacement, typically after five to seven years, but the bed itself continues functioning.
Seasonal care follows the rhythm of the compost basket. In spring, clear out any woody material that has not fully decomposed and refresh the basket with a mix of fresh greens and browns to jump-start decomposition after winter. This is also the time to add the annual compost topdressing and to plant the first crops. In summer, the basket is working hard, and you may need to add material weekly to keep up with the decomposition rate. Water through the basket more frequently during heat waves. In fall, plant cool-season crops in the outer ring while summer crops are still producing in the center, and begin layering fall leaves and garden cleanup debris into the basket to build compost through winter. In winter, the basket goes dormant in cold climates but continues slowly breaking down material. Cover the bed surface with a thick mulch of leaves to protect the soil and insulate the root zone for any overwintering crops like garlic or kale.
One detail that improves performance considerably is keeping the basket covered. A simple lid, a piece of board or a fitted cover, placed over the basket opening between additions prevents rain from flooding the compost and stops animals from raiding the scraps. The lid also retains heat and moisture in the basket, which speeds decomposition. Lift the lid to add material, then replace it. This small habit keeps the system balanced and odor-free.
The keyhole garden I built three years ago has become the most productive square footage in my yard.
