For vaulted patio ceilings, the fan should hang at the midpoint of the vault, not at the peak. Mounting at the peak puts the fan too high and too far from where people actually sit.

Blade Materials
Outdoor fan blades come in several materials, and each has tradeoffs.
ABS plastic is the most common material on mid range outdoor fans. It is lightweight, waterproof, and will not warp. Cheap ABS blades can become brittle after years of UV exposure, but quality ABS with UV stabilizers holds up well. This is what I recommend for most covered patios.
Marine grade plywood is used on some higher end fans. It looks like wood but is sealed against moisture. It can still delaminate if the seal is compromised, so inspect the edges annually.
Aluminum blades are rare but extremely durable. They will not warp, crack, or corrode. They are also noisy because metal blades vibrate more than plastic or wood.

Number of Blades: Does It Matter
Walk into any fan store and you will see fans with 3, 4, 5, or even 6 blades. The number of blades has less effect on airflow than most people think.
The aerodynamic reality is that fewer blades move air more efficiently, but they also create more turbulence and noise. More blades move air more smoothly and quietly but require more motor torque.
For outdoor use, I recommend 4 or 5 blades. Three blade fans are efficient but can sound choppy in open air where there is no ceiling to smooth out the sound. Five blade fans run quieter, which matters more outdoors where ambient noise is lower and you can hear the fan more clearly.
Six or more blades is mostly a styling choice. The airflow difference between 5 and 6 blades is minimal, and the extra weight puts more load on the motor.
Light Kits: Do You Need One
Many outdoor fans come with integrated light kits or have the option to add one. Whether you need a light depends on your patio setup.
If your patio already has dedicated lighting, skip the fan light. Fan lights tend to be dim and poorly positioned for actual task lighting. They hang too high and cast shadows from the fan blades.
If your patio has no overhead lighting, a fan with a light kit is a practical two in one solution. Look for LED light kits rated for outdoor use, with a color temperature around 2700K to 3000K. Avoid anything above 3500K on a patio, because cool white light feels harsh and clinical in an outdoor living space.
One important detail: the light kit must carry the same wet or damp rating as the fan. I have seen people buy a wet rated fan and install a damp rated light kit on it, then wonder why the light shorts out after the first rain.
Installation Realities Nobody Mentions
The fan itself is only half the equation. Installation is where most outdoor fan projects go wrong.
Electrical Boxes
You cannot use a standard ceiling electrical box for a ceiling fan. Fan boxes are reinforced and rated to hold at least 35 pounds, and they must be secured to a structural member. Standard plastic boxes will crack under the vibration of a spinning fan, and the fan will eventually fall.
If your patio ceiling does not have a fan rated box, you need to install one. This means cutting into the ceiling to access the joist, which is more work than most people expect.
Wiring
Outdoor fan wiring needs to be in conduit or UF rated cable, not standard indoor NM cable. If your patio was wired during construction with proper outdoor cable, you are fine. If you are running new wire, use UF B cable or run THHN wire through PVC conduit.
The switch should also be weather rated if it is exposed. A standard indoor toggle switch in a damp location will corrode over time.
Wobble and Balancing
Every fan wobbles a little when it first starts. That is normal. But a persistent wobble that does not go away means the fan is unbalanced, and that wobble will destroy the motor bearings over time.
Most fans come with a balancing kit, which is a clip and some weights. You clip the weight to a blade, run the fan, and see if the wobble improves. It takes some trial and error. Leaving the Fan On
A fan cools people, not air. If nobody is on the patio, turn the fan off. Running a fan in an empty space just wastes electricity and adds motor wear. This sounds obvious, but I have seen plenty of patios with fans running 24/7 through the summer.
Speed Selection
On a hot, still day, run the fan on high. On a breezy day, medium or low is enough. On a cool evening when you just want air circulation, low is plenty. Running on high all the time is noisy and unnecessary when the ambient air is already moving.

Premium fans over 500 dollars offer marginal improvements over mid range fans. You get better finishes, longer warranties, and sometimes smarter controls. The airflow difference between a 250 dollar fan and a 550 dollar fan is rarely noticeable.
