Most lawns are a fight against the place you live. You plant grass that wants cool, wet weather, then spend summer pouring water on it to keep it from going brown, pouring fertilizer on it to keep it green, and pouring herbicide on everything else that wants to grow there instead. Somewhere in there, you mow it every weekend.
I went through that cycle for years before I started pulling lawn out, one section at a time, and replacing it with things that actually wanted to grow in my yard. The surprise was not that the alternatives worked. The surprise was how much less work they were, and how few of them I had seen in other people’s yards. This article is the comparison I wish I had read before I started killing grass.
Why People Switch Away From Grass
Before getting into specific alternatives, it helps to know what you are trying to solve. Different people want different things from a lawn alternative, and the right choice depends on which of these matters most to you:
- Water use. Turf grass is the thirstiest plant in most residential yards. If you live somewhere with summer water restrictions or high water bills, this is usually the trigger.
- Mowing. A typical lawn needs mowing weekly during peak growth. Some alternatives need it once a month, some never.
- Chemicals. Lawns are heavy users of fertilizer, pre-emergent herbicides, and broadleaf weed killers. If you have kids, pets, or a well, this adds up.
- Pollinators. A grass lawn is a desert for bees. A flowering alternative can feed them all summer.
- Shade. Grass struggles under trees. Many alternatives thrive there.
- Poor soil. Grass wants decent loam. Some alternatives will grow in compacted clay, sand, or rocky fill where grass will not.
Write down your top two reasons. That will narrow the field considerably, because no single alternative does everything well.
Clover: The Gateway Alternative
Clover is where most people start, and for good reason. It is cheap, it grows fast, it fixes its own nitrogen, and it stays green through droughts that turn turf brown. White Dutch clover was actually a standard component of lawn seed mixes until the 1950s, when broadleaf herbicides became widespread and the industry decided clover was a weed.
What Clover Does Well
- Stays green from spring through fall with little to no supplemental water in most climates.
- Fixes atmospheric nitrogen through bacteria in its roots, feeding itself and any grass growing with it.
- Tolerates compacted soil and poor fertility better than turf.
- Flowers attract bees, sometimes a lot of bees.
- Grows low enough that mowing is optional, though a monthly mow keeps it tidy and delays flowering.
Where Clover Falls Short
This is the part the sales pages do not tell you. Clover has real limitations.
It is not durable. If you have a dog that runs the same path every day, or kids who play hard on the lawn, clover will wear through. The stems are softer than grass and do not stand up to repetitive foot traffic the way turf does. You will get bare paths.
It is not evergreen in cold climates. Clover goes dormant and browns out in winter, earlier than cool-season grasses. If you want something green year round in zone 5 or colder, clover alone will not do it.
It attracts bees. This is a benefit for a pollinator garden and a problem for a yard where barefoot kids play. You can mow the flowers off before they open, but then you lose the pollinator benefit.
It can be slippery when wet. The foliage holds water, and I have slipped on a wet clover patch more than once.
Microclover Versus Regular Clover
Microclover is a selected variety of white clover with smaller leaves and a lower, denser growth habit. It was bred specifically for lawn use. The pitch is that it blends into a turf lawn invisibly, feeding the grass and filling thin spots without looking like a weed.
In practice, microclover does blend better than regular white Dutch clover, but it is not invisible. The leaves are still recognizably clover, just smaller. And microclover reverts. After a few years, the plants tend to produce larger leaves and taller stems as they cross-pollinate with wild clover. The uniform look you paid for does not last.
I have used microclover as an overseed into existing thin turf, and the result is a lawn that needs less fertilizer and stays greener in summer. As a full lawn replacement, I prefer regular white Dutch clover. It is cheaper, more vigorous, and the larger leaves do not bother me.
How to Plant Clover
Clover seed is tiny, and it is easy to waste it. The seed needs to be on the surface or barely covered, in soil that has been loosened and raked. Broadcasting it onto hard compacted ground is a waste of money. The seed will sit on top, germinate if it rains, and die when the roots cannot penetrate.
The method that has worked for me:
- Kill or remove the existing turf. You can solarize with clear plastic for a summer, smother with cardboard and mulch, or use a non-selective herbicide. Tilling works but brings up weed seeds.
- Rake the soil loose to a depth of an inch or two.
- Mix the clover seed with sand or fine sawdust at about a 1 to 10 ratio. This bulk makes it easier to broadcast evenly.
- Broadcast, rake lightly to settle the seed against the soil, and water gently. Do not bury it.
- Keep the surface moist for two weeks. The seedlings are tiny and die fast if they dry out.
Seed at about 2 to 4 ounces per 1,000 square feet for microclover, or 4 to 8 ounces for white Dutch. Plant in spring after frost danger passes, or early fall.
Moss: For Shade Where Nothing Else Grows
Moss is the alternative for the spot where grass has been failing for years. If you have a north-facing yard, or heavy tree cover, or compacted acidic soil under maples, moss will grow there and grass will not. Stop fighting it.
The Case for Moss
Moss needs no mowing, no fertilizer, no watering once established, and no aeration. It is evergreen through winter in most climates. It is soft underfoot, absorbs rainfall beautifully, and has a quiet, woodsy look that turf cannot match.
It is also genuinely low maintenance in a way that no other lawn alternative is. There is nothing to do. You do not fertilize moss. You do not mow moss. You do not water moss. You just keep leaves off it so it does not get smothered.
The Catch With Moss
Moss wants shade and moisture. If you have a sunny, dry yard, moss is not your answer. It will burn out in full summer sun even if you water it, because it does not have the internal plumbing to move water from roots to leaves the way vascular plants do.
Moss also establishes slowly. You are not going to seed moss and have a lawn in six weeks the way you can with clover. Transplanting moss works, but it takes a season or two to fill in, and you have to keep it consistently damp during that time. There are “moss milkshake” recipes involving blended moss and buttermilk, and they do work, but the success rate is inconsistent. Moss spores are in the air everywhere, and if you create the right conditions, shade, acid soil, consistent moisture, bare soil, moss will often show up on its own.
Moss cannot take foot traffic at all. Walking on it occasionally is fine, but a daily path will wear it through. It has no root system to speak of, just rhizoids that anchor it to the surface, so it cannot recover from being torn up the way grass does.
Propagating Moss From Scratch
If you want to speed up moss establishment, the transplant method works better than the milkshake for me. Find moss growing somewhere it is unwanted, a roof, a driveway crack, a friend’s property. Peel it up in sheets, lay it on prepared bare soil in your shade garden, press it firmly into contact with the soil, and keep it wet for a month. It will attach and spread.
The soil should be compacted, not loose. Moss likes firm ground. Acidic is better, with a pH below 6.0. You can acidify with sulfur if your soil is neutral, but most shady, compacted, poorly drained soil is already acidic.
Creeping Thyme: The Flowering Option
Creeping thyme is the alternative for full sun, dry soil, and moderate foot traffic. It forms a dense mat an inch or two tall, releases a scent when walked on, and flowers in a carpet of pink or purple in midsummer that is genuinely spectacular.
I put in a thyme “lawn” on a hot, dry strip along my driveway where grass had been dying for years. Within two seasons it filled in completely, and in July it is a solid sheet of flowers buzzing with bees. It is the most photographed part of my yard.
What Thyme Needs
Full sun. At least six hours, more is better. Thyme in shade gets thin and leggy.
Excellent drainage. Thyme hails from the Mediterranean and rots in wet soil. If you have clay, amend heavily with gravel and compost, or plant on a slope. I killed my first thyme planting by putting it in flat clay that stayed soggy all winter.
Lean soil. Do not fertilize thyme. Rich soil produces lush, floppy growth that does not stand up to traffic.
Occasional mowing. After the main flower flush, I run the mower over the thyme at its highest setting to deadhead and tidy. This is optional, but it keeps the planting dense and encourages a second, smaller bloom.
Foot Traffic Tolerance
Thyme handles moderate foot traffic better than clover or moss, but it is not a play lawn. A daily walking path is fine. A soccer game is not. The stems break under concentrated repetitive traffic, and the plant does not regenerate fast enough to keep up.
If you want a thyme lawn for a path you walk daily, set stepping stones into it and let the thyme fill between them. That is the best of both worlds and the application I recommend most.
Cost Consideration
Thyme plugs are not cheap. A flat of 50 to 70 plugs runs 30 to 50 dollars, and you need roughly one plug per square foot for reasonable fill-in time. A 500 square foot thyme lawn from plugs is a 300 to 500 dollar investment, plus a season of waiting. Seeding is possible but slower and less reliable. This is not a budget alternative.
Sedum: For the Spot You Forget About
Sedums, the low-growing spreading types like Sedum acre and Sedum album, are the indestructible option. They want sun, they want drainage, and they want to be left alone. I have a patch of Sedum acre on a hot, dry, rocky bank that I have not watered in five years. It is thriving.
Where Sedum Works
Sedum is a ground cover, not a lawn. It does not take foot traffic. Walk on it and the brittle stems break. But for a slope, a hellstrip, a rock garden, or any area you do not walk on, sedum will cover ground, stay green, and flower with almost no care.
The foliage is succulent, so it holds water through droughts. The flowers are usually yellow, pink, or white and cover the planting for a few weeks in summer. Some varieties are evergreen, others die back to the ground in winter.
Where Sedum Does Not Work
Wet soil. Shade. Rich, fertile ground. Foot traffic. Competition from aggressive weeds. Sedum is a plant for difficult, marginal sites, not for a front lawn replacement. If your site is good enough to grow grass, sedum is the wrong choice. It is the plant for the spot where grass will not grow and you have given up.

The Truth About Mixing
You do not have to pick one. The best alternative lawns I have seen are mixes. Clover and thyme together handle a yard with both sun and shade. Clover and low-growing native grasses make a lawn that looks closer to turf but needs half the inputs. Moss and ferns in deep shade, sedum and gravel in full sun.
If you are unsure what will work, plant a small test area first. A 4 by 8 foot strip, planted in the alternative of your choice, will tell you in one season whether it is going to thrive or fail in your conditions. That is a lot cheaper than converting a whole yard and watching it die.
Killing the Existing Lawn
This is the step that trips people up. You cannot just seed clover or thyme into an existing healthy lawn and expect it to take over. The grass will outcompete the seedlings. You have to kill or remove the grass first.
My preferred method is solarization in summer. Lay clear plastic, not black, over the mowed lawn, weigh down the edges, and leave it for six to eight weeks of hot sun. The soil heats to 140 degrees or more, killing grass, weeds, and most seeds. It is chemical-free and effective in hot climates. In cooler climates, it does not work as well and you may need to smother with cardboard and mulch for a full season.
If you are in a hurry, a non-selective herbicide works, but read the label for replanting intervals. Some products have residual activity that will kill your new seedlings for weeks.
Maintenance: Less, But Not Zero
The appeal of lawn alternatives is lower maintenance, not zero maintenance. Here is what to expect:
- Clover. Mow monthly if you want it tidy. Reseed thin spots in fall. Pull invading grasses and broadleaf weeds by hand, because herbicides that kill dandelions also kill clover.
- Moss. Blow or sweep leaves off in fall. Hand-pull any grass or weed that shows up. Water during long droughts if you want it to stay green.
- Thyme. Mow once after bloom. Weed until it fills in, then it largely suppresses weeds on its own.
- Sedum. Almost nothing. Pull the occasional weed. That is it.
Regional Reality Check
Every alternative in this article has a climate it prefers. Clover does well across most of the country but struggles in the deep South’s heat and humidity. Moss needs cool, damp shade and is a non-starter in arid regions. Thyme loves dry heat and rots in humid summers. Sedum is the most universally adaptable but is not a true lawn.
Talk to a local nursery, not a big box store, about what works in your area. Better yet, walk your neighborhood and find yards where alternatives are already growing. If someone two blocks away has a thriving clover lawn, yours will probably work too.
What to Expect in the First Year
The transition from grass to alternative is not instant, and the first year is the hardest. Knowing what to expect prevents discouragement.
Clover
Newly seeded clover takes 2 to 3 weeks to germinate and another month to form visible patches. For the first season, the coverage will be patchy, with bare soil between plants. This is normal. Clover spreads by stolons, above-ground runners, and fills in over the second season. By the second summer, the patchy look is gone.
Expect some weed invasion in the bare spots during the first year. Hand-pull the worst offenders and let the clover fill in. Do not use broadleaf herbicide, because it kills clover.
Moss
Transplanted moss takes a full season to attach and begin spreading. During that time, it needs consistent moisture. If you let it dry out completely, it goes dormant, turns brown, and may or may not recover. The first summer is the critical period. Once established, moss is remarkably resilient, but getting it there requires attention.
Thyme
Thyme plugs planted at one per square foot take a full season to fill in. For the first summer, the planting looks sparse and weedy. Keep the weeds pulled and the thyme watered during dry spells. By the second summer, the plugs have merged into a continuous mat and the weeds are largely excluded.
The temptation is to plant thyme closer, at 4 to 6 inch spacing, for faster fill. This works but costs four times as much in plants. If budget allows, closer spacing gives faster gratification. If not, patience is cheaper.
The Universal First-Year Truth
Every lawn alternative looks worse in its first year than the lawn it replaced. This is the hump that causes most people to give up. The brown patches, the weeds, the sparse growth, all of it is normal and temporary. The second year is better. The third year is when the alternative looks as good as or better than a lawn, with a fraction of the maintenance. Getting through the first year is the challenge.
Making the Switch
Start small. Pick the worst part of your lawn, the driest, the shadiest, the patch that always dies, and convert that first. Learn what it takes. Then expand if it works. A whole-yard conversion in one season is a lot of risk and a lot of money. A 200 square foot test patch is an experiment, and experiments are how you learn what your specific yard will support.
The yard I have now is about half alternative ground cover and half turf, and the turf is shrinking every year. The parts I converted are the parts I no longer have to think about. That is the real payoff. Not the water savings, not the pollinators, though those are nice. It is the Saturday mornings I get back.
